Chapter Thirty-One · Investiture of the Gods

Grand Preceptor Wen drives his troops in pursuit

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a forest road below the clouds, a long-bearded general in armour with a round chest mirror rides a heavy horned ox and looks back grimly while his small son with two hair buns rides a pony beside him; above, on banks of cloud, a robed immortal with a fly whisk points down and his muscular headcloth-wearing attendant shakes out a great plain banner over the road.

A poem says:

The loyal and good leave the realm, its fortunes turning to ash;flood and drought come again and again, a calamity for all the people. The wise and sage Grand Preceptor turns the handle of the Dipper, while slanderers and demons destroy the salt and the plums.

The three passes, men idly say, can rein in the fugitives;from four roads they swarm in confusion, shouting through the weeds. In vain the pursuers are led astray in broad daylight:what blue Heaven has fixed, let no one try to guess.

Now, Grand Preceptor Wen drove his troops in pursuit out through the west gate. All along the road banners and pennants streamed, gongs and drums sounded together, and a great roar of shouting went up. But let us leave them there.
