Chapter Fifty-Two · Investiture of the Gods

Wen Zhong returns to Heaven at Juelong Ridge

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: at night in an open pavilion on the Deer Terrace, King Zhou sleeps with his head on his arm among the wine vessels, his crown slipping, while his consort Daji sits beside him holding a wine ewer; at the left the spirit of Wen Zhong, bareheaded with his hair loose, bows with hands joined, his three eyes fixed on the king.

A poem says:

How many times he reported victory and won wondrous merit, while King Zhou, sunk in lust, doted on his rosy beauties.Back in the capital, there are no more sealed memorials of remonstrance;come to the mountains, there must be tears on the river maples.

Who knew his dreaming soul would end where the beacon smoke ends?Listen only to the grieving apes under the empty night moon.Though his red heart remains, it has become a thing of the past;year after year the cuckoo weeps in the east wind.

Now, when Grand Preceptor Wen saw Chijingzi take out the Yin-Yang Mirror, he gave his qilin a kick, leapt clear of the fight and fell back toward the foot of Mount Yan. Chijingzi did not give chase. The Grand Preceptor was so angry that his face went yellow and he panted for breath, and he said not a word. Xin Huan said, “Grand Preceptor, since neither road will let us through, we had better go back by Mount Huanghua and enter Qinglong Pass.” The Grand Preceptor pondered a long while, then said, “It is not that I could not escape by magic back to Zhaoge, see the Son of Heaven, raise a great army again and plan to win back what we have lost. It is only that I am burdened with these men and horses — how could I abandon them and go off alone?” He had no choice but to turn his army round and take the highroad to Qinglong Pass. Before half a day had passed, he saw a body of troops ahead, stationed at the throat of the road. Grand Preceptor Wen gave the order: “Make camp. I did not expect an ambush ahead.” Before the camp was settled, a cannon boomed, two red banners unfurled, and Nezha, standing on his wheels of wind and fire and gripping his Fire-Tipped Spear, shouted, “Grand Preceptor Wen, don’t dream of going home! This is the place where you go back to Heaven!” The Grand Preceptor was furious; in his rage golden light shot from his three eyes, and he cursed, “Jiang Shang insults me too far! Setting worthless little whelps in ambush here to make light of a great minister of the royal court!” He raised his whip, set his qilin flying forward and went straight for him. Nezha met him at once with his Fire-Tipped Spear. Whip and spear rose together in a great battle. This is what was seen:
