Chapter Eighty · Investiture of the Gods

Yang Ren comes down the mountain to break the plague

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a mountain road below a pass wall, the gentle Yang Ren with closed eyes and an open eye in each palm rides a one-horned deer-like beast standing on scraps of cloud and swings a flame-edged fan at an armoured officer, who is caught in a spinning gust of wind with his horse; four prison carts with craning prisoners stand on the road and tiny soldiers throw down their spears and run.

A poem says:

Plague Umbrellas, canopies of a wicked sorcerer’s craft:pestilence sweeps Jambudvipa as if it were a slaughterhouse. The formation they lay is fierce and stubborn, not easily broken;whoever it touches goes raving mad — how can he recover?

In a moment the sickness spreads till every family is gone;in an instant the contagion of the dead kills house after house. All because Ziya’s calamities were not yet run out,he must suffer hardship below Chuanyun Pass.

Now, Nezha mounted his wheels of wind and fire, came below the pass to challenge them, and shouted, “You there! Tell your commander to send Long Anji out to face me!” When Xu Fang heard the report, he ordered Long Anji out to battle. Long Anji took the order and came out of the pass. Seeing Nezha on his wheels of wind and fire, he thought to himself: “This man is a master of the Daoist arts. Better to put up my treasure first; that way success comes easily.” Long Anji rode before the armies and asked, “Are you Nezha?” No sooner had he spoken — before Nezha could even answer — than he thrust with his spear. Nezha’s spear met it face on. Wheels and horse closed, and after just one round Long Anji threw the Limb-Numbing Ring up into the air and shouted, “Nezha! Look at my treasure!” Nezha looked up and saw the two rings locked together as yin and yang, like a ring of the Supreme Ultimate, ringing with a ding-dong sound. But Long Anji did not know that Nezha had a body made of lotus and had no hun or po souls — how could he fall from his wheels? All at once the ring dropped to the ground. Nezha saw it fall but did not know why. Long Anji was greatly alarmed. Truly:
