Chapter Eighty-Nine · Investiture of the Gods

King Zhou breaks bones and cuts open pregnant women

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on an open terrace above a snow-covered capital, a king in a small crown leans forward at a short table with a winecup raised, entranced by a consort who stands singing with one long sleeve lifted to her breast; a court lady with a round fan sits at his side, and another sits on her own cushion beyond the end of the table holding a wine ewer, her whole figure in the open.

A poem says:

King Zhou’s cruelty had no match, then or since;drunk, lewd and greedy, he heeded a beautiful woman.Blameless women with child met a vicious fate;travellers in trouble fell on a murderous road.

Mocked in the records, he is called ruiner and thief, left for the world to curse as the lone tyrant. The Way of Heaven is far off and hard to fathom;let me just take my cloudy wine and face the flower-girl.

Now, Yao Shuliang came chasing after him. Chang Hao was a snake spirit. He gave his horse its head; a whirlwind rose beneath his feet and rolled up a mass of black fog that covered man and horse alike, and then he showed his true form: a great python. He opened his mouth and breathed out a blast of poisonous vapour. Yao Shuliang could not stand against it and fell senseless from his horse. Chang Hao got down, took his head and shouted, “This is how we’ll take Jiang Shang — look at Yao Shuliang!” None of the lords knew he was a demon. Peng Zushou, Lord of Yanzhou, spurred his horse and shook his spear, shouting, “Churl, how dare you harm our great minister!” Now Wu Long was at Yuan Hong’s right. Seeing Chang Hao win merit, he could not hold himself back. Wielding a pair of sabres, he urged his horse on and came flying forward, saying, “Don’t you charge the foot of our line!” Without a word of reply the two horses met, spear and sabres raised together, and they fought before the lines. The six hundred lords all stood to left and right, watching the two generals fight. Before they had fought many bouts, Wu Long feinted with a sabre and fled, and Peng Zushou gave chase. Wu Long was a centipede spirit. When he saw Peng Zushou close behind him, he showed his true form: a wind sprang up, black cloud came rolling in, the demonic vapour bewildered the senses, and Peng Zushou knew nothing more of what went on around him. With one stroke of his sabre Wu Long cut him in two. The lords could not tell what had happened. They only saw that whenever an officer chased after him, a patch of black cloud covered the officer, and he died on the spot. At Ziya’s side, Yang Jian said to Nezha, “Neither of those two generals is a proper man; there’s something demonic about them. What if you and I go out together, Daoist brother?” Then Wu Long came galloping up before the army, whirling his sabres, and shouted, “Who’s first to taste my two sabres?” Nezha set the wheels of wind and fire turning, wielded the Fire-Tipped Spear, showed his three heads and eight arms, and came to meet him. Wu Long said, “Who are you that comes?” Nezha said, “I am Nezha. You beast, how dare you harm our lords with sorcery!” He swung his spear and stabbed straight at Wu Long. Wu Long quickly parried with his sabres and struck back. Before they had fought three or four bouts, Nezha sent up the Nine-Dragon Divine Fire Cover. With a ringing sound it shut Wu Long inside — but Wu Long had already turned into a streak of blue-green light and gone. Nezha clapped his hand, and by the time nine fire dragons appeared inside the cover, Wu Long was long gone. When Chang Hao saw Nezha shut Wu Long in the Divine Fire Cover, he was enraged. He spurred his horse, gripped his spear and shouted, “Nezha, don’t run! Here I come!” Then Yang Jian, wielding his three-pointed blade on his silver-grey horse, joined Nezha in fighting Chang Hao two against one. Chang Hao saw things going badly and fled from the field. Yang Jian did not chase him either. He took his slingshot in hand and let fly a golden pellet at Chang Hao — but where the pellet landed, nobody knew. Then Nezha sent up the Divine Fire Cover and shut Chang Hao in; and he too, like Wu Long, turned into a streak of red light and was gone. When Yuan Hong saw how wonderfully uncanny his two generals were, he was delighted and gave the order: “Let the three armies beat the drums!” He spurred his horse and charged, shouting, “Jiang Ziya! Let you and me see which of us is the better man!” At the side, Yang Ren saw Yuan Hong charging. He quickly urged on his cloud-glow beast and, wielding his Flying Lightning Spear, held Yuan Hong off. When they had fought five or seven bouts, Yang Ren took out his Five-Fire Fan and fanned it at Yuan Hong; but Yuan Hong had already made off, and the fire only burned his horse to death. Ziya sounded the gong, brought his troops back to camp, took his seat in the command tent and sighed, “What a pity we lost two lords!” He was heavy at heart. Yang Jian came up into the tent and said, “Today your disciple saw that all three of them had the look of demons, not of men. Just now Nezha sent up the Divine Fire Cover, Yang Ren used the Divine Fire Fan and your disciple used his golden pellets, and none of it hurt them — they just turned into blue-green light and were gone.” The lords, too, were all talking about the arts of Chang Hao and Wu Long, every man with his own opinion.
