Chapter Thirty-Four · The Three Heroes and Five Gallants

Yan swears brotherhood and knows a hero when he sees one;Old Liu reads a letter and scorns a poor scholar

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: by day before a rich countryman's gate with studded doors and a stone stair, a young scholar in a new robe bows deeply with hands joined; a stout, smiling squire hurries down the steps with one hand held out to stop the bow; on the left a servant boy with a bundle on his back holds the rein of a saddled white horse and smirks, and a small arched stone bridge crosses a stream behind them.

Now, when Yan saw that Jin had gone, he told Yumo to settle the bill. “There isn’t enough silver,” said Yumo. “We’re short by not quite four taels. Let me reckon it up for you, sir. When we set out we had twenty-eight taels left in all. The day before yesterday, our two meals on the road and odds and ends came to one tael and three qian. Yesterday’s bill was fourteen taels, and with today’s sixteen taels, six qian and five fen on top of that, it all comes to thirty-one taels, nine qian and five fen. So aren’t we short by not quite four taels?” “Then pawn the clothes for a few taels,” said Yan. “Pay off the bill and keep what’s left for the road.” “Two days out of the house and we’re pawning things already!” said Yumo. “The way I see it, these few clothes are all we’ve got. Pawn them today, and what’s left for tomorrow?” Yan paid him no attention.

Yumo was gone a good while. When he came back, he said, “The clothes fetched eight taels in all. With the food bill paid, there’s four taels and a bit left.” “Let’s be on our way,” said Yan. “What else would we be waiting for?” said Yumo. As they went out of the inn gate, Yumo said to himself, “Nice and light and handy, this. No bundle to lug about — it was awfully heavy.” “That’s enough out of you,” said Yan. “What’s done is done. It’s only a little silver spent — what does it matter? Tonight, on the road, you can call the tune.” “This Mr. Jin really is a strange one,” said Yumo. “Say he’s out to cadge free meals — then why order all those dishes and never lift his chopsticks? Even if he’s fond of his drink, there’s no call to order a whole jar, and he can’t hold much anyway: he doesn’t get through a tenth of it, and all the rest is left over, a free gift to the innkeeper. And if it’s live fish he likes, why not just order the fish? Say he means to play a trick on us — but we’d never met him before, and there’s no grudge or quarrel between us. To eat and drink for free and play tricks on people besides — that makes even less sense. I can’t make out what he’s after at all.” “The way I see it,” said Yan, “he’s a free and easy man of letters, and such men are always somewhat given to roaming beyond the bounds of form.”

Master and man chatted idly on the way. As before, they stopped for their morning meal and took plenty of rests, then pressed straight on to the night’s lodging. Yumo had it all worked out. “Sir,” he said, “tonight let’s put up at a little inn and just have a meal. It won’t cost more than two qian a head, and there won’t be anything else to waste money on.” “As you say, as you say,” said Yan. So master and man put up at a little inn.
