Declaring that he had falsely accused an honest man, he had him slapped ten times across the mouth and thrown out of the yamen. Then he ordered Fang Shan brought in. The magistrate had his fetters taken off, explained the whole matter to him and said a few words to comfort him. Seeing himself treated so by the magistrate, and never having dreamed of a match with the son of so great a house, the old schoolmaster was overjoyed and promised readily, “When I see the young master, I shall certainly put in a good word for you, Your Honour.” The magistrate ordered a seat brought for him, and they all waited together in the hall.

Before long the third young master arrived. The magistrate went out to meet him, and Jiang, Zhao and Zhang all came out to welcome him too. The young master wished to get down from his chair, but as he had only just recovered, the magistrate had it carried right into the hall, and Jiang Ping and the others paid their respects to him there. When the third young master stepped down, there was a great deal of modest talk on both sides, and the young master said a great many grateful things to Fang Shan. The magistrate showed the young master into his study and had a banquet laid, and they all deferred to one another over the seats. The third young master and Fang Shan took the places of honour, Jiang Ping sat with Zhang and Zhao on either side, and the magistrate took the host’s seat. Bao Wang was looked after by others elsewhere. They drank and talked.
