Now, when Fourth Master Jiang heard what Hu He said, he thought to himself, “No wonder I couldn’t find my Second Brother. So they’ve caught him.” He was still turning it over when someone suddenly called at the gate outside. Hu He answered, but waved a hand at Jiang Ping to keep quiet, blew out the lamp, and only then went staggering and lurching out to open the temple gate. Someone asked, “Anything happen today?” “Nothing at all,” said Hu He. “Nobody’s come looking, anyhow. And I haven’t been drinking.” Then another voice said, “He’s drunk already, and he says he hasn’t been drinking! Shut the temple gate properly, will you.” And with that the two of them went off to the back.

Hu He shut the temple gate and lit the lamp again. “Brother,” he said, “that’s the end of that. Let’s drink. Get drunk, sleep it off, and never mind any of it.” “Very good,” said Jiang Ping, but secretly he had his own plans for Hu He. Before long he had plied the old Taoist till he was dead drunk and dead to the world. Jiang Ping took off his Taoist robe, tied up his clothes tight and trim, and went into the outer room. There he picked up his fortune-teller’s banner, drew out his three-edged emei piercer, put out the lamp, slipped quietly out of the east wing and made straight for the back courtyard. Sure enough, there stood three brick pagodas, and the one in the middle was very large. He had just come up to it when someone suddenly shouted, “Well now! You’ve tied your lord and master up here and not a word out of you. What are you going to do with me, eh? Be quick and give your master a clean end!” Jiang Ping could tell it was not Han Zhang’s voice. “Who are you?” he said softly. “Don’t shout! I’ve come to save you.” With that he went up to the man, flicked the ropes apart with his piercer, and gently eased his arms back into place.

The big fellow pulled himself together. “Who are you?” he asked. “My name is Jiang Ping,” said Jiang Ping. The big fellow cried out, “Aiyo! You can’t be Fourth Master Jiang, the River Rat?” “The same,” said Jiang Ping. “Keep your voice down.” “It’s an honour, an honour,” said the big fellow. “I’m Long Tao. I trailed the Butterfly here from the shrine of the Kitchen God in Renhe County, meaning to avenge my brother, and instead they caught me. I thought I was done for — who’d have thought you’d find out, Fourth Master, and come to save me?” At that Jiang Ping asked, “Where is my Second Brother?” “I never came across any Second Master,” said Long Tao. “Last night it was Feng Qi, the Night Imp, who brought me word, so I went to the Guanyin Shrine to take the Butterfly. I climbed over the wall and saw a man with a long, slim build fighting the Butterfly, and I jumped down off the wall to help him. Then the Butterfly jumped the wall, and that man, who was far better at it than me, flew over the wall after him and chased him all the way here. But when I’d climbed in over the wall here to help, that man, for some reason, went off over the wall instead. I was no match for the Butterfly to begin with, and with a fat, dark old Taoist on top of him, how could I hold them off? So they caught me.”
