Chapter Seventy-Two · The Three Heroes and Five Gallants

A boy finds a true master and learns his art at the Zhaoxian Lodge;A governor hunts a bully and goes in secret to Bawang Village

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a courtyard with a weapon rack and stone weights, a lean master in a kerchief steadies the forearm of a boy in a deep lunge and points along the straight sword the boy thrusts out.

Now, when Madam Li saw the lotus, the sight of it stirred all her grief, and she burst into tears again. Ni Jizu talked it over with Ni Zhong, and they wanted to take her back to the village with them then and there. Madam Li quickly checked her tears. “My son, put such idle thoughts away! Your mother will never again be stained by the red dust of the world. I had thought your father’s wrong could never be avenged, not in this life nor the next. Who would have thought the Ni family still had you, its one green shoot? If only you study hard, win yourself some post in the government and avenge your father’s wrong, your mother’s lifelong wish will be fulfilled.” When Ni Jizu saw that she would not go to the village, he fell to his knees in tears. “If I had never known my own mother, there would be nothing more to say. But now that I do know, let me do at least a little of a son’s duty by you. If the parents who raised me are unwilling, I will plead and beg them myself. Besides, my father and mother are good, charitable people. How could they refuse a home to my own mother?” “That may be so,” said Madam Li. “But I know how heavy my sins are; a whole life of penance will not undo them. If I fell back into worldly ties, I fear I could not bear such blessings, and they would only bring disaster down on us. Then wouldn’t you be sorry, my son?” Ni Jizu heard her words and saw that her heart was firm as stone and would not turn. He burst out wailing. “Since that is how it is, Mother, I won’t go back either. I will stay here and wait on you.” “Since you understand so much,” said Madam Li, “you know that books are read to learn what is right. As the saying goes, ‘To obey is to be filial.’ Though your mother never raised you, have you no thought for the toil and travail of bearing you, that you dare to defy me? Besides, your father and mother nursed you for three years and had no easy time raising you to manhood. You have not repaid them one part in ten thousand — would you turn ungrateful to them?” This speech left Ni Jizu without a word to say. He could only hang his head and weep.

Madam Li was at a loss. Then suddenly a plan came to her: she must do thus and thus before this dear plague of hers would go home. Her mind made up, she said, “Don’t cry, my son. There are three things I want you to do. When they are all done, your mother will surely go with you. What do you say?” “What three things?” Ni Jizu asked at once. “Tell me, Mother.” “First,” said Madam Li, “from now on you must study hard and be sure to win some post in the government. Second, you must catch your father’s enemy and avenge his wrong. Third, this white jade lotus was handed down by our forebears. There were two of them, which together made a single spray. Take this one back with you as before, and you must find the other and bring it back. When all three are done, your mother will surely go with you. If even one of the three is lacking, your mother can never go with you.” Then she charged Ni Zhong: “My benefactor, all your life you have stood on loyalty and duty, so I need not waste words. If only you stay as true to the end as you have been from the start, it will be the great fortune in the misfortunes of the Ni family. Now go back, quickly! Your father and mother will be at home watching for you.” Having said her piece, Madam Li turned with a sharp wave of her hand and went back inside.

Ni Jizu would not hear of leaving. It was Ni Zhong who, half holding him up and half coaxing him, at last got him out through the courtyard gate — truly, he looked back at every step. The old nun followed to see them off, and Ni Jizu urged her again and again to look after his mother before he left the Baiyi Shrine at last and made straight for Ni Family Village. On the road, master and man went along, the one sighing long and short, the other soothing him with gentle words. “Just now Mother told me three things,” said Ni Jizu. “When I think it over, becoming an official won’t be hard, and avenging Father will be easy. But where am I to look for the white jade lotus?” “To this old servant’s mind,” said Ni Zhong, “whether a thing stays hidden or comes to light is fixed by fate, so that part isn’t hard. It’s becoming an official that’s hard. What matters most is that you study hard from now on, young master.” “I have a wrong as deep as the ocean to avenge,” said Ni Jizu. “How could I not strive to rise? Don’t you worry, sir.” “Why do you call me that, young master?” said Ni Zhong. “I’m afraid it will cost this old servant his blessings.” “You have stooped to serve under others, all for my sake,” said Ni Jizu. “Your kindness weighs as heavy as a mountain. How can I treat you as a servant?” “That may be so,” said Ni Zhong, “but in front of others you must still go on as usual, young master, and not let anything show.” “‘I only put on a show when I happen on a stage’ — I know that well enough,” said Ni Jizu. “And there is one more thing. When we get home, neither of us must let slip a word of what happened today. Once I have made my name, we can tell everyone plainly, and that will be best for all of us.” “You needn’t tell me that, young master,” said Ni Zhong. “For fifteen years this old servant never let it slip. Do you think I can’t keep it hidden now?” Talking as they went, the two came to the village. Ni Jizu saw Old Master Ni and Madam Liang, and everything went on just as before.
