Chapter Twenty-One · Investiture of the Gods

King Wen parades in his honours and flees through the Five Passes

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a rocky hilltop above a mountain road, a clean-shaven winged giant with a fierce face and wide feathered wings leans forward with a plain staff, one hand cupped at his mouth to call down, while below an old bearded rider in a soft hat reins in a rearing white horse and throws up a hand in fright, a fortress gate in the far valley.

詩曰:

黃公恩義救岐主,令箭銅符出帝疆。尤費讒謀追聖主,雲中顯化濟慈航。

A poem says:

Lord Huang, kind and righteous, saves the lord of Xiqi;with arrow of command and bronze tally, he leaves the royal domain. You and Fei, with slander and scheming, send men after the sage ruler;Yunzhongzi works his wonders and ferries him over on the boat of mercy.

從來德大難容世,自此龍飛兆瑞祥。留有吐兒名譽在,至今齒頰有餘芳。

From of old, great virtue has found no room in the world;from now on the dragon takes flight, an omen of good fortune. His fame for the son he vomited up lives on still;to this day its fragrance lingers on men’s lips.

話說文王離了朝歌,連夜過了孟津,渡了黃河,過了澠池,前往臨潼關而來。不題。

Now, King Wen left Zhaoge and pressed on through the night. He passed Mengjin, crossed the Yellow River and passed Mianchi, making for Lintong Pass. But no more of that.
