Chapter Forty-Three · Investiture of the Gods

Grand Preceptor Wen fights a great battle at Xiqi

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a grassy slope on an island by the sea, the Grand Preceptor Wen Zhong, with a third eye on his forehead, stands beside his scaly one-horned beast, a whip in one hand and the other raised in greeting; four Daoists lounge on rocks and grass before a cave, one in a flat headband holding a fly whisk, one in a tall square cap leaning on a staff, one in a fish-tail crown, and a youth with two buns holding a peach, all turning to smile at him.

A poem says:

Battle in the black of night — a pitiful thing:helmets flung away, armour cast off, no clothes on their backs.Braving the smoke, dashing through fire, they seek the road back;their spirit gone, their souls scattered, they look for the way home.

How many heroes died in the blind confusion, how many stout fellows perished in their dreams!Who would have thought that Ji Li, with his wagging tongue, would send the Heavenly Lords to Beimang as well?

Now, Ziya and his generals came to raid Grand Preceptor Wen’s camp, sweeping in like wind and fire. Nezha came charging in on his wheels of wind and fire, his Fire-Tipped Spear in hand. Grand Preceptor Wen hurriedly mounted his black qilin and met him with his whip. Huang Tianhua, sure of his own prowess, came on with his two silver hammers, urging on his jade qilin, joined the fight and hemmed Grand Preceptor Wen in, refusing to let him go. Jinzha and Muzha came up brandishing their precious swords to help. Han Dulong and Xue Ehu, each with a sword, attacked from left and right. The air of slaughter swirled thick, and weapons flashed and glittered. And how fine a night’s battle was it? There is a verse of praise to prove it. It says:
