Chapter Sixty-One · Investiture of the Gods

Yin Hong meets his end on the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: above a sea of cloud, Chijingzi in the lower left holds up a scroll roller overhead in both hands, his face lowered, and the scroll unrolls into an arched bridge; Jiang Ziya on his antlered beast turns at the top of the arch and points back, and the laughing, armoured Yin Hong rides his horse up onto the bridge.

A poem says:

Wondrous are the workings of creation in the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate;immortal and mortal lie worlds apart, and few men know it.Brought out to work its illusions, it is subtle and mysterious indeed;to repent of past wrongs then was an idle thought.

The disciple broke his oath, and his master could not save him;blue Heaven had its purpose, and Earth could show no favour. In those days King Zhou’s evil had grown plain to the utmost;how could one timber hold back anyone at all?

Now, Ma Yuan chased Ziya for a long while but could not catch up with him. He thought to himself, “He’s riding the four-unlike beast, and here I am running along after him on foot! I won’t chase him today; I’ll deal with him tomorrow.” When Ziya saw that Ma Yuan had given up the chase, he reined his mount around and shouted, “Ma Yuan! If you dare come down to this level ground and fight me three bouts, I’ll take you for certain!” Ma Yuan laughed. “What strength do you think you have? Do you dare think I won’t come after you?” And he set off after him again with great strides. Ziya fought another three or four bouts, then turned his mount and fled again. Seeing how things stood, Ma Yuan grew furious. “So you dare try to fool me with the trick of luring the enemy on!” Gnashing his teeth, he gave chase. “If I can’t catch you today, I swear I won’t go back to the army! Even if I have to chase you all the way to the Palace of Jade Emptiness, I’ll seize you and bring you back.” On and on he chased. As evening came on, he saw a mountain ahead; and when he came round its slope, Ziya had vanished. Ma Yuan saw that the mountain was very steep and forbidding. And how did it look? There is a verse of praise to prove it:
