Chapter Sixty-Two · Investiture of the Gods

Zhang Shan and Li Jin march against Xiqi

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: over the walled city of Xiqi, a gigantic eagle-like roc with a hooked beak and wide-spread wings beats down on a great dome of rolling sea waves that covers the city's walls and halls; hills and a few small tents lie around, and a thin crescent moon hangs at the upper left.

A poem says:

In the clash and tumult of arms, no day knows peace;the common folk, ground into the mud and ashes, dwindle and scatter.Willingly they drive the black-haired people to fill the ditches, and harden their hearts to let the people’s fat and marrow feed the plumes of war.

The soldiers have the will to toil for their lord;blue Heaven has no mind to keep the royal gates secure.Only because of the great calamity do men suffer so,till Xiqi reeks of slaughter.

Now, the officer sent from the pass made his journey without incident and came to the city of Zhaoge, where he rested at the post station. The next day he went in through the Meridian Gate to the Office of Documents. That day it was the Middle Counsellor Fang Jingchun who was reading the memorials. He took this one up and read it, and saw that Su Hu had surrendered to Zhou of Qi. Fang Jingchun nodded and cursed, “The old churl! His whole house has enjoyed the Son of Heaven’s favour, yet he never thinks of repaying it, and now he has gone over to the rebels. He is truly worse than a cur or a swine!” So he took the memorial in his arms and went into the inner court, where he asked the palace attendants, “Where is the Son of Heaven?” The attendants answered, “In the Star-Plucking Tower.” Fang Jingchun went straight to the foot of the tower to await the royal summons. The attendants reported him to the Son of Heaven, and when King Zhou heard, he summoned him up into the tower. When Fang Jingchun had made his obeisance, the king said, “What memorial do you bring, Counsellor?” Fang Jingchun said, “Han Rong, Commander of Sishui Pass, has sent a memorial to the capital. He reports that Su Hu, Marquis of Jizhou, has for generations enjoyed the honour of the pepper chamber, and his whole house has basked in Your Majesty’s grace and favour; yet he never thought to repay the state, but has gone over to the rebels, deeply betraying Your Majesty’s sacred grace. Where then is the law? So he has memorialized. Your servant dared not act on his own, and begs Your Majesty’s decision.” When King Zhou saw the memorial he was greatly startled. “Su Hu was a minister of Our own heart, a noble kinsman of the throne. How could he all at once go over to Zhou and abet their wickedness? We hate him bitterly for it! Withdraw for now, Counsellor. We shall see to this Ourselves.” Fang Jingchun went down from the tower. King Zhou summoned Queen Su. Daji had been behind the royal screen and had already heard everything. At the summons she came straight to King Zhou’s table, fell on both knees, her tears falling like pearls, and in a soft, sweet voice she wept and said, “Living deep in the palace, your handmaid has received such grace and favour from Your Majesty as grinding my bones to powder could never repay. I do not know who put my father up to it, but he has gone over to the rebels. His crime reaches to Heaven; by law his whole clan should die, and there can be no pardon. I beg Your Majesty to cut off Daji’s head and hang it up in the capital, as an apology to the realm. Then the hundred officials and the myriad people will know that Your Majesty is wise and sage, that the reins of Heaven are firmly in your hand, that you keep the established laws of your ancestors and show no partiality even to your favourites. That is how your handmaid can repay the glory of Your Majesty’s favour, and in death I shall be more than fortunate.” When she had said this, she laid her fragrant body across King Zhou’s knees, nestling and leaning against him, sobbing and weeping, her tears pouring down like rain. King Zhou saw Daji’s face streaming with tears, her sweet weeping rising and falling, truly like pear blossom in the rain, or a pretty bird crying in spring. Seeing her in such a state, he was moved all the more. He raised her up with his own hands, saying, “My royal wife, your father has rebelled against Us; how could you, deep in the palace, have known of it? What crime is that of yours? We bid you rise. Do not grieve so, or you will spoil your flower-like face. Even if We lost all Our rivers and hills, it would have nothing to do with you, my beloved. Take good care of yourself.” Daji thanked him for his grace. The next day King Zhou ascended the Nine-Bay Hall and gathered his civil and military officials. “Marquis Su has betrayed Us and gone over to Zhou. We hate him bitterly for it! Who will take this labour on Our behalf and march against Zhou, and seize Su Hu and the whole rebel crowd and bring them to Us, so that their crimes may be punished?” From the ranks a great minister stepped out: it was the Senior Counsellor Li Ding. He came forward and said, “Jiang Shang is wise and full of stratagems, and knows how to judge men and how to use them; so every army that goes against him is either defeated or surrenders. Again and again he has disgraced the royal army; this is lawlessness indeed. If we do not choose the right man and swiftly punish his crimes, the lords of the realm will all watch and follow his example, and how then shall we deter those to come? Your servant recommends the grand commander-in-chief Zhang Shan. He has long experience in war, is careful in affairs and thoughtful in his plans, and is equal to this charge. He will surely not disgrace Your Majesty’s command.” King Zhou was overjoyed to hear this and at once ordered a decree drawn up and sent, and an officer dispatched with it to Sanshan Pass. The envoy left Zhaoge, and the journey passed without incident. One day he arrived at Sanshan Pass and rested at the post station. The next day he sent word to the Marshal who held the pass, Zhang Shan, and Zhang Shan came with Qian Bao, Li Jin and the others to the post station to receive the royal decree. In the hall of the headquarters an incense table was set out, and they knelt to hear the decree read.
