Three times he knocks at the mystic gate to bow before the great immortal,where shell palaces and pearl towers stand as nature made them:luan-birds soar and dance in pairs below the jasper steps;tame deer bleat and roam before the azure rails.Endless war begins from here;so much slaughter starts from now.The rising fortune of the house of Zhou receives the new mandate,and it has a bond besides with the true enlightenment of the West.
話說龍吉公主被火靈聖母一劍砍傷胸膛，大叫一聲，撥轉馬望西北逃走。火靈聖母追趕有六七十里方回。這一陣洪錦折兵一萬有餘。胡升大喜，迎接火靈聖母進關。只見龍吉公主乃蕊宮仙子，今墮凡塵，也不免遭此一劍之厄。夫妻帶傷而逃，至六七十里，方纔收集敗殘人馬，立住營寨。忙取丹藥敷搽，一時即愈。忙作文書申姜元帥求援兵。且說差官非一日至子牙大營。子牙正坐，忽報：「洪錦遣官，轅門等令。」子牙命：「令來。」差官進營叩頭，呈上文書。子牙展開，書曰：
话说龙吉公主被火灵圣母一剑砍伤胸膛，大叫一声，拨转马望西北逃走。火灵圣母追赶有六七十里方回。这一阵洪锦折兵一万有余。胡升大喜，迎接火灵圣母进关。只见龙吉公主乃蕊宫仙子，今堕凡尘，也不免遭此一剑之厄。夫妻带伤而逃，至六七十里，方才收集败残人马，立住营寨。忙取丹药敷搽，一时即愈。忙作文书申姜元帅求援兵。且说差官非一日至子牙大营。子牙正坐，忽报：「洪锦遣官，辕门等令。」子牙命：「令来。」差官进营叩头，呈上文书。子牙展开，书曰：
Now, when Holy Mother Huoling cut Princess Longji across the breast with a stroke of her sword, the princess gave a great cry, wheeled her horse and fled to the northwest. Holy Mother Huoling chased her for sixty or seventy li before turning back. In this battle Hong Jin lost more than ten thousand men. Hu Sheng was overjoyed and welcomed Holy Mother Huoling into the pass. Princess Longji, you see, was a fairy of the Pistil Palace; now that she had fallen into the mortal dust, even she could not escape the ordeal of this sword stroke. Husband and wife fled with their wounds, and only after sixty or seventy li did they gather the beaten remnants of their army and pitch camp. They quickly took out elixir and spread it on their wounds, and in a moment they were healed. They hurriedly wrote a dispatch to Marshal Jiang asking for reinforcements. Now, the officer they sent was more than a day on the road before he reached Ziya’s main camp. Ziya was sitting in his tent when it was suddenly reported: “An officer sent by Hong Jin awaits your orders at the camp gate.” Ziya ordered: “Bring him in.” The officer came into the camp, kowtowed and presented the dispatch. Ziya unfolded it. The letter said:
「奉命東征佳夢關副將洪錦頓首百拜，奉書謹啟大元戎麾下：末將以樗櫟之才，謬叨重任，日夜祗懼，恐有不克負荷，有傷元帥之明。自分兵抵關之日，屢獲全勝，因獲逆命守關裨將胡雷，擅用妖術，被末將妻用法斬之。豈意彼師火靈聖母欲圖報仇，自恃道術。末將初會戰時，不知深淺，誤中他火龍兵沖來，勢不可解，大折一陣。乞元帥速發援兵，以解倒懸。非比尋常可以緩視之也。謹此上書，不勝翹望之至！」話說子牙看罷大驚：「這事非我自去不可！」隨分付李靖：「暫署大營事務，候我親去走一遭。爾等不可違吾節制，亦不可與汜水關會兵；緊守營寨，毋得妄動，以挫軍威。違者定按軍法！等我回來，再取此關。」李靖領令。

“Hong Jin, deputy general under orders to march east against Jiameng Pass, knocks his head to the ground and bows a hundred times, and respectfully presents this letter beneath the banner of the grand commander-in-chief. With talents as worthless as the ailanthus and the gnarled oak, this humble officer has been unworthily entrusted with a heavy charge. Day and night I have been in dread lest I fail to bear it and tarnish the Marshal’s good judgement. From the day I divided the army and reached the pass, we won victory after victory, and took the rebel lieutenant who held the pass, Hu Lei, who made free with sorcery; my wife slew him with her arts. Who could have known that his teacher, Holy Mother Huoling, would seek revenge, trusting in her Daoist arts? When this humble officer first met her in battle, I did not know how deep she ran, and was caught off guard when her fire-dragon soldiers charged at us. The onslaught could not be broken, and we suffered a great defeat. I beg the Marshal to send reinforcements quickly, to cut us down from where we hang upside down. This is no ordinary matter, to be looked on lightly. I respectfully submit this letter, in the utmost hope and longing!” Now, when Ziya had read it, he was greatly alarmed: “Nothing will do but that I go myself!” He then instructed Li Jing: “Take charge of the main camp for now, while I make the journey in person. None of you is to disobey my orders, nor join battle with Sishui Pass. Hold the camp fast and make no rash move that would blunt the army’s spirit. Whoever disobeys will be dealt with by martial law! When I come back, we will take this pass.” Li Jing received the order.
