Chapter Seventy-Four · Investiture of the Gods

The Two Generals Heng and Ha show their magic powers

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: before Qinglong Pass, the generals Zheng Lun and Chen Qi, each on a lion-headed beast and holding a short club, tip backwards in their saddles as a pair of light beams from Zheng Lun's nose and a puff of vapour from Chen Qi's mouth collide between them; tiny soldiers with hooked poles and ropes rush in from both sides.

A poem says:

Two generals meet, each with a name of his own;at Qinglong Pass they meet to settle who will win.In the Five Phases and the arts of the Way the two are well matched;through ten thousand kalpas of rebirth they share this one life. The yellow vapour, without a sound, can overthrow a general;the white light, casting its shadow, takes soldiers captive too.Know that in wondrous arts there is no first or last:when the great calamity comes, a life topples of itself.

Now, Huang Tianlu and his two brothers had Chen Qi hemmed in, when all at once a spear caught Chen Qi square in the right leg. Chen Qi made his mount leap clear of the ring, and Huang Tianlu came chasing after him. Though Chen Qi was wounded in the leg, his magic arts were still his own. He raised his Demon-Sweeping Pestle, and the Flying Tiger Soldiers came swarming up; he spat out the yellow vapour refined in his belly, and Huang Tianlu tumbled from the saddle. At once the Flying Tiger Soldiers caught him with their hooked poles and took him alive, and they brought him into the pass before Qiu Yin. Qiu Yin gave orders that Huang Tianlu, too, be locked up. Now, Huang Tianjue and Huang Tianxiang went back to camp to see their father and told him their brother had been captured. Commander Huang was most unhappy, and sent an officer to find out whether Tianlu’s head had been hung up as a warning. A scout came back to report: “If it please you, my lord, it has not been hung up.” Now, Chen Qi had a wound in his leg, and he spread his own elixir on it. The next day, Qiu Yin’s wounds had healed completely, and he was set on revenge. He did not wear a helmet, but bound a golden band round his head, like a wandering ascetic; he put on his armour and his robe, mounted his horse, took up his spear and came riding to the Zhou camp, calling for Huang Tianxiang by name to fight it out. A mounted messenger brought the report into the camp, and Tianxiang wanted to go out and fight at once. Feihu could not hold him back. Tianxiang mounted his horse, took up his spear and rode out of camp to face Qiu Yin, shouting, “Qiu Yin, today I am going to catch you and win merit!” He spurred his horse forward and, shaking the spear in his hand, thrust straight at Qiu Yin. Qiu Yin met him face on with his own spear. The two horses wheeled, two spears rose together, and they fought a great battle below the pass. Huang Tianxiang’s spear came like a wild wind and driving rain; there was no standing against it. Qiu Yin could not hold him off. He feigned a thrust, wheeled his horse round and made for the pass. Huang Tianxiang, not knowing what was good for him, came chasing after him. Then a white light rose from the top of Qiu Yin’s head. The light parted, and inside it appeared a red pearl as big as a bowl, spinning round and round in the air. Qiu Yin shouted, “Huang Tianxiang, look at this treasure of mine!” Huang Tianxiang did not know what it meant. He looked up, and before he knew it his soul and spirit were drifting away; in a moment he could not tell north from south or west from east, and all went dark and dim. The foot soldiers took him alive, pulled him from his horse and bound his arms with rope. By the time he came to, he was already a prisoner. Qiu Yin was overjoyed, and went back into the pass to the beat of the drums. Truly:

Alas for the young hero;he has become a man in a dream of the Southern Branch.
