且說湘子先前飲得三杯酒，睡倒在地上，人人都說他酒醉跌倒了，恰不知道湘子出了陽神，逕往陰司地府去。看官，且說湘子為何這等時候，忙忙地去見閻羅天子，有恁事故？只因玉帝敕旨，著他去度韓退之成真復職，他見退之稟性迂疏，立心戇直，貪戀著高官大祿，不肯回頭，恐怕一時間無常迅速，有誤差遣，因此上一逕到陰司閻君殿上，查看退之還有幾年陽壽，幾時官祿，待他命斷祿絕的時節，狠去度他，庶不枉費心機，這正是：

Now, when Xiangzi had drunk his three cups of wine and lay asleep on the ground, everyone said he had fallen over drunk. Little did they know that he had sent out his yang spirit and gone straight to the Underworld. You may wonder, reader, why Xiangzi should go hurrying off to see King Yama at a time like this, and on what business. It was because the Jade Emperor had decreed that he should bring Han Yu to the Way, so that Han Yu might become true and return to his old post. But Xiangzi saw that Han Yu was pedantic and unworldly by nature and blunt and stubborn at heart, that he clung to high office and a great stipend and would not turn back; and he feared that death, which comes swiftly, might come all of a sudden and the mission he had been sent on would fail. So he went straight to King Yama’s hall in the Underworld, to see how many more years of life Han Yu had and how long his office would last; then, when the time came for his life to be cut off and his stipend to end, he could go all out to bring him to the Way, and his pains would not be wasted.
