Chapter One Hundred and Eleven · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

The prefect lays a plan and calls on a villain;Ji Gong catches Hua Yunlong by a clever trick

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a garden with rockwork, plum trees and a pavilion, a grinning ragged man in a servant's cloak stands in the doorway of a hall with a hand on each side of the open doors, while inside a young man in a cloak has leapt up, knocking over his stool and dropping his cup, one hand thrown out in terror.

Now, when Tian Guoben, the Mountain-Subduing Leopard, heard that the prefect had come to call, he came out at once from the inner rooms to receive him. When he got outside the main gate and looked, he saw a crowd of officers in attendance and the prefect sitting in a big sedan chair. Tian Guoben came up to the chair. “Your Honour the prefect has arrived,” he said, “and this humble commoner Tian Guoben has been slow to receive you. I beg Your Honour’s pardon.” Prefect Zhang Youde at once had the bearers draw out the poles and take away the front rail, and he stepped down from the chair. “I have long heard of your great name, Squire Tian,” said the prefect, “and now I have the good fortune to meet you. There is no need to be so modest, Squire.” “After you, Your Honour,” said Tian Guoben. The prefect walked in, with Ji Gong following close at his back. The head constables in his train all stopped outside the second gate, and Ji Gong and the prefect came into the main hall. “Please be seated, Your Honour,” said Tian Guoben.

The prefect sat down. Tian Guoben, without any show of modesty, sat down too to keep him company, and told his men to serve tea. “What is the business that brings Your Honour here today?” said Tian Guoben. “I have long heard of your great name, Squire,” said the prefect, “and have come especially to call on you and take the chance of a good long talk.” While they were talking, Ji Gong stood behind the prefect, leaned back against the lattice doors, shut both eyes and looked as if he was going to sleep. Tian Guoben looked at him. “Your Honour’s good steward,” he said, “must have been up all night and be worn out. Why not let him go and rest outside?” Ji Gong took him at his word, opened his eyes and walked straight out, and the prefect did not stop him. Out of the main hall the monk went, and made straight for the garden. When he came to the side gate of the garden and poked his head in, he saw a well-kept garden with a warm pavilion and a cool one, terraces and little lodges, and on the north side a flower hall of three bays. Hua Yunlong, the Thieving Rat of Heaven and Earth, was standing at the door of the flower hall, looking over toward the side gate. The villain had been sitting in the flower hall with a table of wine laid out, but he could not get any of it down. A thief’s heart is never easy, after all, and he was turning it over in his mind: “The prefect wouldn’t come calling for no reason. There must be something hidden behind it.” And he thought, “Can he have come to arrest me?” He felt truly uneasy. He got up and came out of the flower hall, and when he poked his head out he saw Ji Gong dressed as an attendant. Ji Gong had washed his face as well, so Hua Yunlong did not recognize him. Hua Yunlong beckoned to Ji Gong with a nod: he wanted to ask how many men the prefect had brought and what he had come for. “Second Master,” Hua Yunlong kept calling, “over here.” Ji Gong said nothing. Hua Yunlong thought, If this attendant isn’t deaf, he must be dumb, and in a huff he stopped calling. He went back into the flower hall. Ji Gong came after him, and when he reached the doorway of the flower hall he spread both arms across the door. “Hua Yunlong,” he said, “this time you can’t get away.”

The moment Hua Yunlong heard him, he knew Ji Gong’s voice. The villain was frightened out of his wits. “Master,” said Hua Yunlong, “why are you arresting me, sir?” “I wasn’t really planning to arrest you,” said the monk. “If I’d wanted to arrest you, I’d have had you in Ma Jing’s double wall in Xiaoyue Village. Or failing that, when Lu Tong had hold of your legs at Penglai Temple, I’d have caught you then.” Hua Yunlong thought, Yes, that’s right. So why is he arresting me now? “Tian Guoben went to the prefecture yamen and tipped them off,” said the monk, “and told me to come and get you.” “Fine!” said Hua Yunlong when he heard this. “Tian Guoben, that son of a bitch, really has the face of a man and the heart of a beast.” “You’d better just accept your fate,” said the monk. With that he pointed a finger, and the immobilizing spell fixed Hua Yunlong where he stood. The monk turned and came out to the second gate and called Chai Yuanlu and Du Zhenying in. When they reached the garden the monk said, “This is Hua Yunlong. He’s caught. Go and chain him up.” Chai and Du were overjoyed beyond their hopes. They went to the flower hall and looked, and sure enough it was him. Only then did they shake out their iron chain and lock the lecher in it. The monk reached into Hua Yunlong’s pouch, took out the Exquisite Translucent White Jade Bracelet and the Thirteen-Tier Phoenix Crown Set with Gems and Hanging Pearls, and handed them to Chai Yuanlu. “Bring him along,” said the monk. “We’re going to arrest Tian Guoben.”
