Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Six · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Under orders from the bench, he sets out to seize Duan Shanfeng;Inviting his friend along, he lays his plan at the Qingfeng Tower

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in front of a butcher's stall with hanging pork, a ragged monk laughs and points as he holds up a piece of meat, while three apron-wearing shop hands in headbands pile on their own stout master, who lies on the paving with his arms raised, crying out.

Now, as Yu Deshui was making his cheap offer, the monk arrived. “Friend,” he said, “what’s the matter with your leg?” “A human-face sore,” said Li Sande. “Do you want to get better, or don’t you?” said the monk. “Why wouldn’t I want to get better?” said Li Sande. “I’m only afraid you won’t,” said the monk. “Monk, isn’t that just hot air?” said Yu Deshui. “If you can cure him, I’ll pay three or four strings for the medicine.” “Will you really pay?” said the monk. “If he’s cured, I’ll pay,” said Yu Deshui. “You needn’t pay three or four strings,” said the monk. “Give me two strings of cash and I’ll cure him. But you have to take a sheet of paper and stamp your shop’s seal on it. Hand me a brush and I’ll write out a few medicines. Whatever's to be had, you stamp it, and someone goes to the shop to fetch the medicine.” Yu Deshui thought, “A foul complaint like that — how can it get better just because he says so?” He fetched a sheet of paper at once, stamped his seal on it and handed it to the monk. The monk asked for the brush and wrote for a good long while, and nobody saw what he wrote. When he had finished he said, “If I cure him, you pay two strings.” “I’ll pay,” said Yu Deshui. The monk chewed up a lump of medicine and plastered it over the mouth of Li Sande’s sore, and at once rotten flesh, pus and blood came streaming out. When it had all drained away, the monk rubbed the sore with his hand and chanted, “Om mani padme hum! Om, by command — he! There, it’s better.” At once the sore closed flat and the leg was as good as new. Li Sande stood up, and the onlookers all said together, “He’s a living immortal, and that’s a wonder drug!” “Shopkeeper Yu,” said the monk, “hand over the two strings.” Yu Deshui was stunned. He had only been talking cheap, with no thought of really paying, and now the monk wanted money. “Come off it, Master,” said Yu Deshui. “You’re really asking me for money?” “You talk cheap and then won’t pay? That won’t do,” said the monk. “I have a paper here, and your seal is on it.” The monk took it out and read it aloud. On it was written:

Li Sande, the man with the sore on his leg,has engaged this monk to cure it;The fee agreed is two strings of cash, and Yu Deshui stands surety to ensure it.

Below that he had written “Guarantor”, and the seal was stamped on it. “If you won’t pay,” said the monk, “then we’ll stand trial over it.” Yu Deshui had no way out and paid the two strings. “Master,” said Li Sande, “you’re the benefactor who saved my life. In saving me you’ve saved my whole family. Come with me to the Duan family tavern outside the South Gate; I want to thank you properly.” “Fine,” said the monk. “I was just wanting a drink.” He went with Li Sande to the Duan family tavern. “Boss,” said Li Sande, “look, my sore’s healed.” “How did it heal?” said the shopkeeper. “This Master here cured me,” said Li Sande. “Boss, first bring him wine and dishes. Whatever the Master eats and drinks, I’ll pay for it all. I’m going home first to let my father and mother see me so they can stop worrying. Whatever you do, don’t let the Master leave.” “Right you are,” said everyone.
