I heard Liu Xi brought a charge against Liu San the Joker, and nothing much was done to Liu San either. I mustn’t own up to it.” With that he said, “Brother Liu, what would I be doing at Liangguan Village?” “If you don’t want people to know, don’t do it,” said Liu Wentong. “You killed Liu Xi’s wife at Liangguan Village. Did you think I didn’t know?” “You’re talking rubbish,” said Duan Shanfeng. “And what if you do know?” “There are people out to arrest you right now,” said Liu Wentong. “I’m warning you, as a friend should.” “Unless it’s you who’s brought them in to take me,” said Duan Shanfeng. Over at his table the monk said, “That’s it, here comes the fight!” Crash! The monk smashed his wine cup. At once Wang Xiong, Li Bao and the soldiers downstairs raised a shout: “Take him!” Wang Xiong and Li Bao had barely reached the top of the stairs when the monk fixed them where they stood with the immobilizing spell. Duan Shanfeng saw things had gone wrong. He kicked the table over, wrenched off a table leg and swung it at Liu Wentong. Liu Wentong flung off his cloak, drew his single iron whip, and the two of them were at it. The waiter ran off in a fright, forgot about the stairs and went tumbling down them. “Help! Help!” the monk kept yelling. He hoisted an Eight Immortals table over his head and ran about every which way. When Duan Shanfeng swung the table leg at Liu Wentong, the monk blocked it with his Eight Immortals table, and the blow landed on the table; when Liu Wentong swung his whip at Duan Shanfeng, the monk let it be. Duan Shanfeng heard voices on every side shouting, “Take Duan Shanfeng! Don’t let him get away!” “Of the thirty-six stratagems,” thought Duan Shanfeng, “running away is the best.” He twisted round and leapt out through the window. Liu Wentong could not leap over eaves and run along walls. “He’s getting away!” he cried. “No, he isn’t,” said the monk. Duan Shanfeng had only just leapt down from the upper floor when the monk leapt down after him and landed right on top of him, knocking him flat. The soldiers closed in and chained Duan Shanfeng up. “You’ve hurt my back,” said the monk, “and bumped my leg.”

Wang Xiong and Li Bao could move again, and they came downstairs with Liu Wentong and took Duan Shanfeng straight to the yamen. When they reached Xiaoshan County, His Honour took his seat in court at once. Wang Xiong and Li Bao reported, “We’ve brought in Duan Shanfeng.” “How did you take him?” His Honour asked. Wang Xiong hid nothing. He told it all just as it happened: how they had asked Liu Wentong to help with the arrest, and how a poor monk had come along and helped them. “And this poor monk, what of him?” His Honour asked. When Wang Xiong had told him, His Honour understood. At once he had Duan Shanfeng brought up. “Duan Shanfeng,” said His Honour, “why did you kill Madam Yang, wife of Liu Xi of Liangguan Village?” “Your humble servant knows nothing about it,” said Duan Shanfeng. His Honour flew into a rage. “It seems questioning you with folded hands will never get a confession out of you. Bring the leg press!” At once the leg press was fetched: the three sticks, ancestor of the five punishments, were flung down in the hall. One look, and Duan Shanfeng said, “Your Honour need not use torture. I’ll confess. Liu Xi’s wife — I wanted her and she refused me, so I killed her. I beg Your Honour’s mercy.” His Honour nodded and had Duan Shanfeng put in irons and taken to prison for the time being. Then he called Liu Wentong up, looked him over, and told Li Bao and Wang Xiong to give Liu Wentong a hundred taels of silver as a reward. Liu Wentong would not take it. “Don’t refuse it, elder brother,” said Wang Xiong. “It’s His Honour’s reward.” “Then let’s do it this way,” said Liu Wentong. “Give twenty taels to the soldiers to share out, for their trouble today. Give twenty for all the fellows at the yamen to share, twenty apiece to you two, and the last twenty to smooth things for Duan Shanfeng in prison, so he doesn’t suffer. That way I do right by him as a friend.” “So be it,” said Wang Xiong. While they were talking, His Honour summoned Wang Xiong and Li Bao back up. “You two find that poor monk who helped you,” said His Honour, “and bring him to me quickly. I’ll give you ten taels apiece. If you can’t find him, I’ll have you each given forty strokes of the heavy bamboo.” Wang Xiong and Li Bao came back down. “Where are we to look?” they thought. They hurried to send their men out to find a poor monk. Before long the men came back with three or four poor monks in chains, all of them begging small alms, some carrying wooden fish, some carrying drums. Wang Xiong took one look. “Wrong ones,” he said. “Let them all go.” Then he and Li Bao went out, and the two of them set off to search for the monk themselves.
