Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Six · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

At the prefect’s yamen, Wuchan works a wondrous art;On the Cao’e River, Lei and Chen run down a robbers’ boat

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: along a path between a rice field and a broad river, a slim young man in a cloak and a bearded man in a headband run side by side with swords in their hands and sleeves streaming behind them, a small covered boat far off on the water.

Now, Chan Master Ji Gong was in the middle of his wine when he gave a shiver. He worked it out by his inner light and already knew the whole of it. He got up at once, called Lei Ming and Chen Liang to a place where no one was about, and said, “Lei Ming, Chen Liang, are you two my disciples or not?” “Master, what makes you say such a thing?” said Lei Ming and Chen Liang. “Have I treated you two well or not?” said the monk. “How could you not have?” said Lei and Chen. “How many times have I saved your lives?” said the monk. “Several times now,” said Lei Ming and Chen Liang. “Master, you’ve been to us like the one who gave us life a second time. Whatever you have to say, just give the order.” “Since I’ve treated you two well,” said the monk, “now this monk has something that needs doing. Will you two give it everything you’ve got?” “Whatever it is, Master,” said Lei Ming and Chen Liang, “we two won’t refuse it if we die ten thousand deaths.”

“Good,” said the monk. “This trip of mine to Baishui Lake was first to catch the demon, and second so that I could make my way to Tiantai County to visit my uncle. Now my uncle has sent my cousin Wang Quan out with our old family steward to look for me, and today my cousin and the old servant have gone and boarded a robbers’ boat. When the sun reaches noon, the two of them will be in mortal danger — they’ll be dead for certain. If you two are my disciples, get out of Shaoxing Prefecture quick, follow the riverbank straight west and make for the Cao’e River. Look for a boat on the river: that’s the robbers’ boat. You’ll see a young gentleman in scholar’s dress — that’s your Senior Uncle, Wang Quan — and an old man — that’s the old steward, Li Fu. There are no other passengers on board; everyone else on that boat is a robber. Go, quickly. Once the sun reaches noon, the two of them will be dead. If you two can’t save your Senior Uncle Wang Quan, then you needn’t come and see me again. You won’t count as my disciples any more.”

When Lei Ming and Chen Liang heard this, they didn’t even stop to take leave of the prefect. They took to their heels, ran out of the yamen and out through the South Gate. Along the riverbank they worked the art of flying over land and ran straight west, more than twenty li in one breath. Seeing that it was already mid-morning, they slowed a little, then ran another twenty li and more. They had just reached the Cao’e River when they saw a small boat in the distance. A man came out of the stern cabin with a steel blade in his hand, making for the front cabin. As the two came nearer, they saw someone carry a head out of the front cabin, dripping with blood — a young man’s head. At the sight of it Lei Ming went frantic. The boat was more than thirty feet from the bank.
