Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Eight · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Wuchan saves the travellers and burns the robbers; Two righteous men stray onto Mount Bagua

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a study full of treasures at night, with a crescent moon in the doorway, an old hermit with a long white beard laughs and waves a hand toward the seats, a bearded man and a slim young man in a cloak stand struck by the shelves of vases, bonsai and a coral tree, and a young page holds the door curtain aside.

Now, Lei Ming and Chen Liang had lost their way when all at once they heard a bell ringing. The two of them followed the sound and tracked it down. Coming close, they saw an old temple in the mountains, showing in the moonlight. There was writing over the main gate: “Songyin Temple”. The two of them went to the side gate and called out. From inside came a cry of “Limitless Buddha”, and two Daoist boys came out.

“Little brother, guess who’s come?” said one. “Maybe it’s the Perfected One Zixia, Li Hanling, from Yunxia Temple,” said the other, “or else the Old Immortal Dongfang Taiyue, or perhaps the Immortal Master Baiyun. If it isn’t the Immortal Master Baiyun, it’s the Perfected One Yehe. Apart from those few, nobody else ever comes to our temple.” Talking, they opened the gate. The Daoist boy took one look. “Where have you common mortals come from?” Lei Ming and Chen Liang hurriedly said, “Our greetings, immortal lad. We two lost our road and have strayed onto your precious mountain by mistake. We beg you, immortal lad, to report to the master of the temple, and we hope the master will be so kind as to let us two put up here for the night.” The little Daoist boy looked them over. “And what are you two called?” “My surname is Chen and my name is Chen Liang,” said Chen Liang. “His surname is Lei and he’s called Lei Ming. We two are escorts from Zhenjiang Prefecture. We were coming from Shaoxing Prefecture and lost our way.” “You two wait here,” said the boy. “I’ll go in and report. Whether our Patriarch will see you or not, I can’t say.” “Good,” said Chen Liang. “Thank you for your trouble, immortal lad.” The little Daoist boy went in, and before long he came out again. “Our Patriarch says you two are to come in.” Only then did Lei Ming and Chen Liang go in, and the little Daoist boy shut the gate behind them. The two of them followed him into the courtyard and looked about. Pines and bamboo had been planted there, and a clear breeze drifted through.

In the very centre stood the main hall, with a moon terrace before it, and on the terrace sat an old Daoist in meditation, gazing at the moon. To east and west were side halls. Truly, within these walls lay a world apart. Chen Liang thought to himself: “A man’s life in this world is one long dream. People fight for fame and grab for profit, strive to win and show off their strength, and everyone is bound by the chains of profit and the reins of fame. No wonder people say:

The general in iron mail crosses the pass by night;the courtier waits on the water clock in the fifth-watch cold;At the mountain temple the sun is high and the monks are still abed:reckon it up, and fame and profit are not worth ease.

Far better to leap out beyond the Three Realms and stand outside the Five Elements, to leave home and cultivate the Way in the mountains, with a pure elegance all its own.” When Chen Liang had looked his fill, the little Daoist boy pointed. “This is the Patriarch of this house.” Lei Ming and Chen Liang came close and looked. The old Daoist’s hair was like the snow of deep winter, his beard whiter than the frost of late autumn. He wore an old-bronze Daoist robe, white socks and cloud-patterned shoes: an immortal in bearing and in bone.
