Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Seven · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Ji Gong works his magic to master the demon wife; The arhat goes home to visit his mother’s kin

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a wine shop at a river landing, a ragged monk laughs and points up at a blank slip of paper on the wall, while the young manager behind the counter scratches his head with his mouth open, one hand held out; wine jars stand on the shelves and the counter holds an abacus and scales.

Now, when Ji Gong let out his Buddha’s light, inner light and golden light, the demon at last knelt down and begged for mercy. The monk told the demon to show its true form, and he looked: it was a musk deer.

A word of explanation: this musk deer was the third disciple of the Jade-Faced Old Fox Demon of Tianmu Palace, on the far side of Mount Tiantai, and had three thousand five hundred years of cultivation. This old fox demon was the daughter of the Five Clouds Patriarch of Wuyun Cave on Mount Wuyun, and called herself the Jade-Faced Immortal Lady of Longevity (Yumian Changshou Xiangu). The musk deer often went to Qingjing Nunnery to hear the scriptures, and later she thought, ‘I’d do better to take the old nun as my teacher and learn the scriptures from her.’ She gave herself a shake and turned into a beautiful woman, and went to the nunnery to throw herself on the old nun’s mercy. She said she lived north of the village; her husband had died and her mother-in-law wanted to marry her off again, but she did not want to remarry. She wished to take the old nun as her teacher, and would gladly knock her head to the ground three times at dawn and dusk and burn a censer of incense morning and night in the service of the Buddha. She said her surname was Zhang and her name Xiangniang. The old nun Miaohui believed her, not knowing she was a demon, and took her in. Who would have thought that Han Wenmei would see her, set his heart on her and ask the old nun to act as go-between? The old nun was afraid that if Han Wenmei died, Han Cheng and his wife would be left without an heir, so it was with good intentions that she made the match between Xiangniang and Han Wenmei. Today the musk deer had met Ji Gong, and at once she begged him to spare her life. “If you want me to spare you, that can be done,” said the monk, “so long as you do one thing for me.” “Only spare my life, holy monk,” said Zhang Xiangniang, “and whatever it is, you have only to command.” “Lend me your ear,” said the monk. “Thus and so, and then this way and that. Do it exactly as I say, and I’ll spare you.” “However the holy monk says, so I’ll do,” said the musk deer. “In that case,” said the monk, “off you go about your business. We’ll meet the day after tomorrow.”

The musk deer gave her body a sway and was gone. Only then did the monk bring Sun Daoquan round. As soon as Sun Daoquan came to his senses he opened his eyes and saw Ji Gong standing beside him, and he hurried to pay his respects to his master. “For no reason at all you had to go meddling in other people’s business,” said the monk. “‘Quarrels come from talking too much; grief comes from pushing yourself forward.’ You haven’t got that much skill, and still you want to catch demons? You didn’t catch the demon, and the demon all but ate you.” “If you hadn’t come to save me, Master,” said Sun Daoquan, “my life would have been finished!” “You went to catch a demon and they threw you out,” said the monk. “What face have you got left to show people? I’ll still give you a boost and let you play the immortal to the full.” “Master,” said Sun Daoquan, “how am I to play the immortal to the full?” “Lend me your ear,” said the monk. “Thus and so, this way and that, and you’ll have played the immortal to the full.” Sun Daoquan nodded and agreed. “Off you go,” said the monk. “I’ve other business.” The monk left the temple of the mountain god and came straight to Haitang Bridge. On the west side of the road was a tavern called the Fengming Tavern. When it first opened, this tavern had been started by Han Wenmei, Wang Quan and Li Xiuyuan, each of the three putting in three hundred taels of silver as capital, not to make money but as a place for the three of them to amuse themselves. Later, once Li Xiuyuan went away, Wang Quan stopped going to look after the shop, and when Han Wenmei fell ill the shop was handed over to the household servant Wang Lu to manage.
