Chapter One Hundred and Fifty-Two · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Young Master Xiuyuan calls on Baoyue; The Arhat Zhijue meets Kunlun

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in front of the main hall of a mountain monastery with a great incense burner, a grinning young man in a scholar's cap lifts one leg over a long bench, a bald abbot with prayer beads raises a bundle of chopsticks with a twinkle in his eye, and an old man at the right throws out his hands in alarm.

Now, Ji Gong was sitting on the ground counting money when the six monks who begged small alms came running up. “Fine monk you are!” they all said. “You make off with the money for all six of us, and here you sit counting it?” As they spoke, the six monks came at him with their fists. “Let’s fight one against one,” said Ji Gong. The six monks surrounded Ji Gong and set about him, but whoever landed a punch on Ji Gong, Ji Gong was sure to land one back, and not one of the six got the better of him. In the thick of the fight, two riders came from due north: Wang Quan and Li Fu. When the old squire saw Li Xiuyuan’s horse bolt, he had promptly sent men after it. The two of them were still searching when they saw Young Master Li back in his ragged monk’s robe, fighting a crowd of monks. Wang Quan hurried down from his horse. “Stop, stop!” he said. “Keep out of this,” said the poor monks. “He’s swindled us out of our money.” “Stop talking nonsense,” said Wang Quan, “and clear off. This is our young master.” When the monks heard that, they dared not raise a hand. “Do you really mean to riot?” said Wang Quan. “Take your money and go!” At that, each monk took two hundred cash and backed away, all meek obedience. “Young Master,” said Wang Quan, “where did you go?” “I went with them to Dong Family Village to beg alms,” said Ji Gong, “and got one steamed bun and two hundred cash.” “Oh, Young Master!” said Wang Quan. “Aren’t you afraid of people laughing at you? That’s no stranger’s house. Squire Dong is a relative of ours! Where’s your horse?” “Tied to a tree over there,” said the monk. “How is it we didn’t see it just now?” said Wang Quan. The monk pointed. “Isn’t that it?” Wang Quan and Li Fu turned their heads, and sure enough, there was the horse tied to a tree. They all went into the wood together and untied it. Ji Gong swung himself into the saddle and went back with the servants.

“Where did you go?” said Squire Wang. “Nowhere,” said Ji Gong. “I went begging alms.” “You’re just fooling about, child,” said Wang Anshi. “You’re about to return to lay life, and you still can’t forget your alms-begging? From now on you’re not to beg alms again.” Ji Gong nodded and agreed. They urged their horses on and made for Guoqing Temple on the mountainside. The temple stood halfway up the slope. They urged their horses on, and had only just reached the foot of the slope when they saw, outside the gate of Guoqing Temple, monks standing pair by pair in ranks on either side to welcome them, some tens of pairs in all. Wang Anshi, seeing it, simply took it that the abbot knew Squire Wang was rich and was showing him this much respect. Not so. The old abbot of Guoqing Temple had been Abbot Xingkong. Now the old abbot had passed into nirvana, and Xingkong’s disciple, the monk Baoyue, was in charge. Abbot Xingkong had been an eminent monk who had attained the Way. When he was about to pass away, he called his disciple Baoyue to his side and said, “In such a year, on such a day of such a month, the Arhat Zhijue will come to offer incense. You must do thus and so, so and thus.” So the monk Baoyue had kept it carefully in mind. Today, from the front of the main hall outward, fifty-four pairs stood in ranks: a hundred and eight monks, each in a monk’s robe, holding hand censers and hand chimes, and chanting, “True Buddha! We welcome the Arhat Zhijue.”

How could Wang Anshi know what lay behind it? They all came to the front of the temple and dismounted. “What a lot of bald gourd-heads,” said Ji Gong. The monks thought to themselves, “What an obnoxious monk. He calls us bald gourd-heads, and he’s a monk himself!” The monks were all ordinary mortals and had no idea who Ji Gong really was. When Squire Wang and his party entered the temple, the monk Baoyue came out to meet them. He saw Ji Gong and greeted him with palms joined, and Ji Gong returned the courtesy; the old squire could not make out what it meant. “The old squire has come,” said Baoyue. “And how should I address the abbot?” said Wang Anshi. “I am called Baoyue,” said the monk. This is the part of the story called ‘Young Master Xiuyuan calls on Baoyue; the Arhat Zhijue meets Kunlun’. Coming to Guoqing Temple that day, Wang Anshi first gave every monk a monk’s robe, a pair of monk’s shoes and two strings of cash. The abbot invited the old squire to take tea in the meditation hall. “I have come today,” said Wang Anshi, “expressly to have my nephew Li Xiuyuan jump the wall and return to lay life. I beg you, Abbot, be merciful.” The monk Baoyue nodded and had things made ready outside. They all came before the main hall and burned incense. A bench was set down in front of the main hall, and that counted as the wall. “Old Squire,” said the monk Baoyue, “when your nephew jumps the wall, I must give him a hundred blows of the Chan staff and drive him out of the temple.” When Wang Anshi heard this, he said, “My nephew is delicate. A hundred blows of the Chan staff? How could he bear it?” “There’s no need to use the real staff,” said the monk Baoyue. “We’ll take a hundred chopsticks in place of the staff, and one stroke will count for ten.” “That will do,” said the old squire. “Xiuyuan,” said the monk Baoyue, “once I have beaten you, jump over the bench and run out of the temple gate, and that will be that.” Ji Gong nodded. Baoyue picked up the chopsticks, made a pass with them, struck him once and said, “Ah,

On the first no incense burned,on the fifteenth no prayers to say;The front hall never swept, the back hall heaped with lumps of clay;Fine wine from dawn to dusk, and dog meat with you all the day;Not fated for the cloister:home to your noble house, away!Off with that patched gown of yours, and out the mountain gate today!”

When he had finished, he told Li Xiuyuan to jump the wall. Ji Gong jumped the bench and took to his heels for the mountain gate. “Don’t run!” said Wang Anshi. The words were not out of his mouth when they heard Li Xiuyuan shout, “I can’t stop my feet!”
