Now, Wang Taihe dug with the iron spade, and when he was down more than two feet he heard a clunk. He looked and saw a stone slab. He lifted the slab, and there was a whole cellar of gold and silver ingots. The gold ingots were all horseshoe gold, a hundred taels apiece; the silver ingots were the big kind, two hundred taels apiece. When Wang Taihe saw this, he first took one out, buried the rest again just as before, and didn’t dare breathe a word. The next day he went to his father-in-law’s house and said he meant to build. “Have you got the money?” said Squire Han. “Not much,” said Wang Taihe. “I’ll make do.” First he bought two strongboxes for silver, then had a timber yard come and look the place over. His plot of ground was not small, and to begin with he put up three bays of tiled house. As the building went on, he went on moving the gold and silver out, and when the house was finished he counted the gold ingots: six hundred of them, each good for five thousand taels of silver. The silver ingots came to four hundred, a thousand ingots in all. From then on he was suddenly a very rich man, with more than three million taels of silver. He opened a goldsmith’s and a silk shop in the district and bought up fields and houses. Everyone knew Wang Taihe had come home rich, but nobody knew how he had done it. Wang Taihe thought to himself: “Back in Songjiang Prefecture that Daoist read my face and said I was bound to starve to death. Now I’ve come into this great fortune, how could I starve? That Daoist very nearly cost me my marriage.” From then on he had no faith in monks or Daoists and said they were all frauds who led people astray with lies. Every year Wang Taihe gave out gruel in winter and tea in summer and handed out padded jackets and trousers, and whenever he met poor folk, the old, the sick, the blind, he was sure to help them. The one thing he would not do was feed a monk or give to a Daoist. Why, then, did he send after the monk today and give him ten thousand taels? Because he had seen what was written on the spirit screen. Ji Gong had written two quatrains. The first went:
In Songjiang once I had my fortune told;Hanling said I’d be poor my whole life long. Now, as things stand, I’m suddenly rich, and all because of Su Xing and Ma Yurong.
