Chapter One Hundred and Sixty-Nine · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Wang Shengxian sees a beauty and burns with lust;Steward Lu coaches the bandits in a wicked plot

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a quiet lane with a white wall and a willow, a young woman at an open gate bends over a pedlar's tray of thread skeins, while a stout man in a peony-patterned robe and winged cap, riding past on a white horse, turns right round in the saddle to stare at her and the groom leading the horse looks back at him.

Now, Lu Bingwen had put Dou Yongheng in the leg press when all at once a strange wind sprang up in the courtroom. The truth was that Dou Yongheng had been falsely accused.

A word of explanation: the whole of Dou Yongheng’s trouble had come about because his wife was so beautiful. In the city of Lin’an there were four bullies. The first was Chancellor Qin’s brother, Wang Shengxian, the Flashy Libertine. The second was Ma Ming, the Young Master of Wind and Moon. The third was the Life-Chasing Ghost, Second Young Master Qin Huan. The fourth was Young Master Luo, nicknamed the Street-Clearing Master. One day Madam Zhou was at her gate buying embroidery floss when, as chance would have it, Wang Shengxian the Flashy Libertine came riding through Fourth Lane, Qingzhu, with a pack of vicious servants behind him. Madam Zhou was a beauty, a loveliness fit for a palace. She wore no heavy paint or powder, only plain, simple clothes, and that made her all the more charming. She was truly worthy of the words: brows spread like willow leaves, lips parted like cherries, almond eyes full of feeling, fragrant cheeks full of grace; a face like pear blossom, cheeks like apricot buds; lovelier than the fairies of the Jade Pool or Chang’e in the Moon Palace.

Wang Shengxian took one look, and his heart and soul went floating away. “Whose wife is that woman?” he asked his servants. One of them, Wang Huaizhong, said, “Master, you go on home. I’ll find out.” Wang Shengxian went home, and before long Wang Huaizhong came back. “Did you find out?” said Wang Shengxian. “I found out, sir,” said Wang Huaizhong, “and you’d better put her out of your mind, Master.” “Why?” said Wang Shengxian. “I asked about her,” said Wang Huaizhong. “She’s the wife of Dou Yongheng, the Tiger-Slaying Hero, the Black-Faced Bear. That Dou Yongheng has a thousand catties of strength in his two arms. How could anybody carry her off?” At this Wang Shengxian said, “Oh, dear! That woman really is a beauty. All these concubines of mine are nothing special; next to her they fall far short. The moment I set eyes on her, my soul flew clean away. Whichever of you can find a way to get that beauty into my hands, I’ll give him five hundred taels of silver.” The servants all shook their heads. “We really can’t think of a way,” they said. Wang Shengxian was like a man bewitched. He pined for her over his tea and over his rice, just as if he had lost his soul. Two or three days later a servant came in to announce: “Lu Bingwen, commander of the capital garrison, has come to pay his respects.” When Wang Shengxian heard that his pupil had come, he quickly had him shown in.
