Now, Chan Master Ji Gong shouted, “Injustice!”, stepped up, reached out and grabbed the carrying pole of the sedan chair. Crack! — the pole snapped. The chair pitched forward, and Lord Lu of the Criminal Court was very nearly thrown out. Inside the chair he lurched forward, and his second-rank gauze cap fell off. As luck would have it, the cap rolled and rolled and landed in a spot where people relieved themselves. He couldn’t ride in the chair any more, and he couldn’t wear the cap any more. Lu Bingwen flew into a rage. He ordered the monk put in chains and stalked into the yamen in a temper. The runners chained the monk and took him to the runners’ guardroom. “Monk, you’ve got some nerve,” said a runner, “snapping the carrying pole of His Lordship of the Criminal Court! You’re in for a fine time later, you are.” “I didn’t know what I was doing either,” said the monk. “Some sort of strength came over me, and out came His Lordship.” “When you go before His Lordship in a bit,” the runner told the monk, “say just that. Don’t change a word.” “Naturally,” said the monk. As they were talking, they heard the clappers and the gong sound together: His Lordship was opening court. Lu Bingwen was in a towering temper. In the yamen he had changed into another cap, at once called for the court to be made ready, and ordered the monk brought in.

The runners brought the monk up at once. Lu Bingwen had meant to have him dragged down the moment he came up, without a word of argument, and beaten hard, to vent the foul temper in his chest. But when the monk came up, before Lu Bingwen had said a thing, a servant stepped over from the side and said in his ear, “My lord, this monk mustn’t be beaten. He’s Ji Gong of Lingyin Temple. He’s Chancellor Qin’s substitute monk. If you beat him, my lord, wouldn’t that be an insult to Chancellor Qin?” When Lu Bingwen heard this, he thought, “No wonder he’s so wild and unruly. So he’s the substitute monk of my teacher’s elder brother. How can I beat him?” There was nothing for it. He swallowed his anger and said, “Monk, you have left the world. You mustn’t do things so roughly! Even if you have some wrong to complain of, you can tell it calmly!” “I didn’t do it on purpose either,” the monk answered. “Please don’t be angry, my lord.” Lu Bingwen was just looking for a way to climb down, so he said, “Since you didn’t mean it, and since you are a monk, I won’t hold it against you. Go on, and mind you behave yourself from now on.” And that would have been the end of it.

Who would have thought the monk wouldn’t leave it at that? “This monk has truly been wronged!” said the monk. “Last night our temple took on a Buddhist service, a third-day rite with seven monks. The temple was busy and we were short of monks — there were only four left, so we added a baldy, five of us all told. When we’d finished the third-day rite, the family said they’d give us hot rice soup to eat if we threw in a hungry-ghost rite for nothing. We monks were all starving half mad, so we ate the soup and threw in a hungry-ghost rite. Who’d have thought that when we’d finished chanting the sutras, the family would say, ‘The monk in the presiding seat has a poor voice’? They wouldn’t pay, and they beat us monks besides. I came to cry injustice, and somehow, I don’t know how, I put too much muscle into it and out came Your Lordship.” When Lu Bingwen heard this, it was beyond all reason. In front of all these officers, if he didn’t beat the monk now, he would never save face. Lu Bingwen thought, “I’ll beat him first and see after. If Chancellor Qin asks me, I’ll go to him and beg his pardon. I’ll say I didn’t know it was his substitute monk. Surely he won’t throw me out of office over a monk.” With that he slapped down the sounding block. “Monk, you have a lot of nerve! A mouthful of nonsense, making trouble in an important seat of government! Drag him down and give him forty heavy strokes of the board!” “Yes, sir!” answered the man in charge of punishments.
