Chapter One Hundred and Ninety-Four · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

The squirt-tube troops show their might and break the sorcery;Elder Ji braves danger to catch the villains

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a temple courtyard beside a pavilion over a well, a huge hairy hand clamps on the head of a ragged monk who is bent double with one leg kicking and his fan waving, while a bearded man and a younger man with hands on their sword hilts run toward him and a prefect behind them lifts a hand in horror.

Now, Liu Yuansu, the Daoist of the Seven Stars, recited a spell, and stones flew and sand whirled straight at the government troops. None of the soldiers could open their eyes. “Ji Gong, come quick!” they all shouted together. The monk pointed with his hand and chanted the six-syllable mantra: “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!” At once the wind dropped and the dust settled. When the Daoist of the Seven Stars saw the ragged monk, he took fright, turned tail and ran back. Xie Tianji, the Perfected One of the Eight Trigrams, said “Limitless Buddha!” and then, “Stand aside, worthy brother, and let me take him.” He drew his sword and hurried forward. “You there,” he said, “are you Crazy Ji?” “Just so, the very same,” said the monk. “Do you know how formidable your Patriarch here is?” said Xie Tianji. “If you know what’s good for you, come over here this minute, kneel down, kowtow to me and call me Patriarch three times. This man of the mountains has a heart that loves life, and I’ll spare you. If not, I’ll finish you off on the spot.” “You shaggy-haired old Daoist,” said the monk, “even if you kowtowed to me and called His Lordship the Monk your ancestor three times, I still wouldn’t spare you.”

Xie Tianji, the Perfected One of the Eight Trigrams, saw that the monk was just an ordinary mortal, so how could he think anything of him? How was he to know that the monk had long since shut away his Buddha light, inner light and golden light? The old Daoist came at him with his sword raised and chopped straight down at the monk’s head. Quick as a spinning top, the monk dodged aside, then reached out and gave the old Daoist a poke. The old Daoist struck again and again, one cut after another, and still could not touch the monk. The monk poked him here and pinched him there, pinched him there and poked him here. The old Daoist grew really desperate. At once he muttered a spell, and from the level ground a strange wind arose. Out of the sky came swarms of venomous snakes and monstrous serpents, hares and deer, foxes and badgers. Countless wild beasts rushed straight at the troops, baring their fangs and brandishing their claws and biting the soldiers, who fell back in terror one after another. The monk pointed with his hand and chanted: “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!”

At once a streak of yellow light appeared, and all these creatures showed their true form: every one of them was made of paper, and they dropped to the ground. Seeing that things had gone wrong, Xie Tianji, the Perfected One of the Eight Trigrams, hurried back. “Patriarch,” he said, “our magic powers are too small; we’re no match for the monk. We beg you, Patriarch, to work your great magic and go and capture him.” Shao Huafeng saw how serious this was. He shouted again and again, and at once flourished his sword and rushed forward. “Crazy Ji, you villain!” he said. “This man of the mountains has no old quarrel with you and no new feud, yet you set yourself against me for no reason. Today your Patriarch here will take you and hack your body into ten thousand pieces, and only then will the rage in my breast be eased.” “You wicked beast,” said the monk, “are you Shao Huafeng, the Red-Haired Divine Officer?” “Your Patriarch, the very same,” said the old Daoist. “You’re just the man I want to catch,” said the monk. “Since you have left the household life, you ought to keep the law and your proper station, leap out beyond the Three Realms and stand outside the Five Elements, untouched by a speck of dust, every care emptied away: sweep the floor without harming an ant, and shade the lamp with gauze for pity of the moths. A Daoist ought to give up the sins of greed, anger, delusion and craving. But you, for no reason, lead people astray with wicked talk and slaughter living beings. You gather outlaws of the rivers and seas from the greenwood, you sell stupefying incense and knockout drugs and bring ruin on every quarter, you send men everywhere to drug and kidnap, you defile the wives and daughters of decent families, and you tear families apart and scatter their flesh and blood. Above, you call down the wrath of Heaven; below, you call down the hatred of men. ‘Calamities sent by Heaven may yet be escaped; calamities you bring on yourself you will not live through.’ This monk has no wish to meddle in other people’s business, but your crimes are truly monstrous, and for this monk to destroy the wicked is itself a good intention. Today your evil has reached its full measure, and still you cling to your delusions and won’t wake up. Do you still mean to fight me?” When the old Daoist heard this, he was so furious that the Three Corpse Spirits within him leapt in rage and the bold breath of his five spirits shot up to the sky. He swung his sword and chopped straight down at the monk’s head. The monk dodged aside. They traded blows three or five times; the monk was nimble, and the old Daoist could not touch him. He grew really desperate and sprang aside. “Crazy Ji, you villain, you’ll be the death of me with rage!” he said. “This man of the mountains will take you with a treasure.” “Take out your treasure, then,” said the monk, “and let me have a look.”
