Chapter Two Hundred and Five · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Wuyuan is taken as a disciple and sent to seize Shao Huafeng;A sworn brother is met, and Shao tells of the wrongs done to him

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a monastery courtyard, a tall old Daoist stands wrapped round and round with rope from shoulders to knees, while a huge long-haired monk with a whisk tucked under his arm fumbles at the knots with a bewildered look, and a ragged monk stands laughing with a hand on his hip in a round gateway.

Now, Ma Daoxuan took a treasure out of his pouch. It was called the Soul-Shaking Tablet: let it ring out once — clang-a-lang! — and no matter how many people there were, it could shake loose their three hun-souls and seven po-souls. The moment the old Daoist brought it out today, Fahong and the others, who knew how deadly this treasure was, hurried out of the way. The old Daoist shook the tablet, and clang-a-lang! it rang out — but who would have thought that Ji Gong would just give his head a shake and stay on his feet? “That treasure of yours is no good,” said the monk. “Try another. This one doesn’t scare me.” At the sight, Ma Daoxuan’s anger surged up. “Wretched crazy monk, you’ll be the death of me!” he said. At once he took out another treasure, called the Light-Shunning Fire-Spirit Cover. It was shaped like the little cover you put over a cricket, and whoever it came down on would be burned by the true fire of the Three Powers inside until his skin was charred and his flesh in tatters. Now he shook out the cover, the old Daoist muttered a spell, and with a whoosh a beam of golden light came down over the monk. Ji Gong roared with laughter and pointed, and the cover went for the old Daoist. Ma Daoxuan chanted a spell and pointed, and it went for the monk again. The monk pointed and chanted the six-syllable mantra: “Om mani padme hum! Om — by command — he!” Back came the cover, and down it went over the old Daoist himself.

When the monk Jinfeng saw this, his anger surged up: the old Daoist had tried to cover the man with his treasure, missed, and covered himself instead. Jinfeng at once lifted off the Light-Shunning Fire-Spirit Cover and saw that the old Daoist’s clothes had all caught fire; if he hadn’t recited his body-guarding spell, he would have burned up too. The old Daoist went red to the ears with shame. “Let me take him,” said Jinfeng. “You’re a pushover too,” said Ji Gong. At once Jinfeng opened his mouth and spat out a stream of black vapour. It was his inner elixir, nine thousand years and more in the making, and he meant to knock Ji Gong flat with it — but who would have thought it would be no use either? “You fine creature!” said Ji Gong. “So you can blow air. Blow bubbles if you like — I’m still not scared.” Jinfeng thought to himself: Strange. He’s only a mortal of common clay, yet there’s something formidable about him. At once he took out an Immortal-Binding Rope and flung it into the air. A beam of golden light went for Ji Gong, and Ji Gong was heard crying out, “Oh no! Help, somebody, help!” Before their eyes Ji Gong was tied up. Jinfeng roared with laughter. “I wondered how much power Crazy Ji really had,” he said. “So this is all it comes to.” Fahong and the others came over. “Master, have you caught Crazy Ji?” they said. “I’ve tied him up with my Immortal-Binding Rope,” said Jinfeng. “I’m handing him over to you. You’re not to take his life. Shame him a little, make him see what I can do, and leave it at that.” “Not so fast, Master,” said Fahong. “Crazy Ji has vast magic powers. I doubt you could tie him up that easily. It might be a fake.”

Those words gave the game away. They looked again, and the one tied up wasn’t the monk at all: it was Ma Daoxuan. Jinfeng was astounded. “Good heavens!” he said. “This is what they call the great Five-Elements art of shifting and transport. Crazy Ji’s powers must be no small thing.” He hurried over and untied Ma Daoxuan. “What did you tie me up for?” said Ma Daoxuan. “I don’t know myself!” said Jinfeng. Just as they were talking, Ji Gong came in from outside. Ji Gong roared with laughter. “Have you got any more good treasures? If you’re out, I’ve got a treasure of my own.” The monk pulled off a straw sandal and threw it at Jinfeng. Just as Jinfeng dodged aside, Ji Gong pointed and said, “Turn!” The sandal smacked Jinfeng right in the face. Ji Gong held out his hand. “Come back,” he said, and the sandal flew straight back. “I’ve got another magic treasure,” said Ji Gong. At once he whipped off his monk’s cap and flung it. With a whoosh, golden light swirled and a thousand rays of auspicious vapour streamed out. Jinfeng saw it was going badly and tried to run, but it was too late: the cap came down on him like Mount Tai. There was a crash as if mountains were falling and the earth splitting, and Jinfeng showed his true form: a great alligator dragon as big as a table, croaking and croaking. He had nine thousand years and more of cultivation. “Fahong, take a look,” said Ji Gong. “This is your master.” Fahong and the others were struck dumb. “I don’t suppose you know where I come from either,” said Ji Gong. “I’ll let you have a look.”
