Now, Chan Master Ji Gong asked Zhang Wenkui what the trouble was. “Ever since I took up my post at this yamen,” said Zhang Wenkui, “my little sister has been haunted by a demon. I never used to put any faith in such things — heresies, prodigies and spirits — and I simply took it that my sister was raving mad. But it has grown worse and worse. Now even her looks have changed, and she won’t eat properly. Every night, as soon as the second watch comes, the demon arrives, and actually talks with her in her room. You can hear it plain as day from outside, and everyone is too frightened to go to the back of the house. Holy monk, I beg you, venerable sir, have mercy: catch the demon and cleanse the house, drive off the spirit and cure the sickness, and give my little sister a second life.” The monk worked it out by his inner light and saw the whole thing clearly at once. “Easily done,” he said. “Nothing to worry about. Tonight, clear out the young lady’s room and have her move to another one. The Old Immortal Elder and I will go into that room and wait for the demon.” “Excellent,” said Zhang Wenkui. “Holy monk, what will you need to catch the demon?” “Nothing at all,” said the monk.

Zhang Wenkui at once had a servant take word to the inner quarters for the young lady to move into the old lady’s room, and the servant went to see to it. Zhang Wenkui ordered wine set out in the study. The servants wiped down the table, laid out cups and plates in a crowded array and brought on the wine and dishes, and Zhang Wenkui kept the monk and the Daoist company as they drank to their hearts’ content. “Holy monk,” said the Old Immortal Elder, “where are you off to tomorrow?” “Tomorrow I must hurry to Danyang County,” said the monk. “My disciples Lei Ming and Chen Liang are in trouble, and I can’t not go. As for your temple, Immortal Elder, we’ll ask His Honour the county magistrate to take it in hand. Let His Honour put himself out a bit more for it and give it some thought.” “Set your mind at rest, Immortal Master,” said Zhang Wenkui. “Tomorrow I’ll send people to invite the gentry and the association heads here, and we’ll all talk it over and see this good work done together.”

As they talked they finished their drinking, and it was already time to light the lamps. “Clear out the room at the back,” said the monk, “and the two of us will go back there and wait. Once we’ve caught the demon, we’ll call you all to come and see.” Zhang Wenkui at once had a servant light a lamp and lead the way, and together they went to the young lady’s room at the back. The courtyard there was a closed quadrangle, and the young lady lived in the inner room on the east side of the main room. When Zhang Wenkui had brought the monk and the Daoist into the room, the monk said, “You go on out, Your Honour. Wait till I call you, then you can all come.” Only then did Zhang Wenkui turn and go out. Ji Gong and the Old Immortal Elder sat cross-legged in the room in meditation, eyes closed, resting their spirits, and waited until the drum struck the second watch. Then they heard a wind blowing outside. “Here he comes,” said the monk. “No need for you to take him, holy monk,” said the Old Immortal Elder. “Why should you trouble yourself over a petty little demon? Let me catch him.” “Very well,” said the monk.
