Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-Four · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Returning to Lingyin, master and disciples meet;Through no fault of theirs, four heroes are wronged

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a street inside a city gate, a procession of wooden cage-carts drawn by donkeys carries four shackled men, two runners walk beside the carts, and at the left a ragged monk half hidden behind a stall post presses a hand to his chest and watches.

Now, Chan Master Ji Gong had just arrived at Lingyin Temple. Here, Qianzai Changxiu had just been let go, and Chu Daoyuan was talking with his elder brother in the faith, Sun Daoquan, each telling the other all that had happened since they parted, when they saw Ji Gong come in from outside. “Master’s here!” the two of them said when they saw him, and hurried forward to bow. “Get up, you two,” said the monk. “Master, if you’d come one step sooner,” said Chu Daoyuan, “you’d have run into an alligator dragon making trouble here. I caught him in my Cloud-Light Bag, but I couldn’t bear to harm him, so I let him go again.” “I know,” said the monk. “Where are you coming back from, Master?” said Sun Daoquan. “I’ve come back from Changzhou Prefecture,” said the monk. “I still have urgent business. You two stay here in the temple. I only came to see the old abbot, and then I have to be off again.” “What urgent business, Master, to keep you in such a rush?” said Chu Daoyuan. The monk heaved a sigh. “Don’t ask. Your young elder brother Wuchan went to Mount Wanhua to catch Shao Huafeng and set fire to the Shengjiao Hall and burned it down, and now he’s turned the Eight Demons against me. I’ve made an appointment with the Eight Demons: on the fifteenth of this month we meet at Jinshan Temple. The Eight Demons are sure to set up their Demon-Fire Golden-Light Formation. This monk has a calamity of demon fire coming, and I can’t not go. I still have urgent business with the old abbot. You two mind the temple for me, and on no account go far.” Sun Daoquan and Chu Daoyuan nodded and agreed. Only then did the monk go to the back. When he saw the old abbot, he said, “Master above, your disciple Daoji pays his respects to you, Master.”

The old abbot, Abbot Yuankong, looked at him and said, “Namo Amitabha. Good, good. Daoji, you’ve come back. Very good. You and I have been master and disciple, and there is a matter I must entrust to you.” The monk nodded. “I know. That’s the very thing I came about. Don’t you worry, sir. But I still have to be off now. I’ve made an appointment with the Eight Demons to meet at Jinshan Temple on the fifteenth. This ordeal with the demons is one I can’t escape. When it’s over, I’ll be here on the day without fail. I won’t let it go wrong.” “Very good,” said the old abbot. “There is one more karmic matter here that you will have to deal with too.” Ji Gong nodded. “I know. I’m going now. I’m off to Lin’an, and I’ll look up a few friends on the way.” As he spoke, Ji Gong turned and hurried out, and once more told Sun Daoquan and Chu Daoyuan to mind the temple well and not go far. “Master, you needn’t keep telling us,” said Chu Daoyuan. Only then did Ji Gong leave Lingyin Temple, go down the hill and come in through the Qiantang Gate. As he was walking along, he saw a crowd of officers escorting four prison carts. Inside were four prisoners: none other than Lei Ming, Cloud and Smoke in the Wind; Chen Liang, the Masterful White Ape; Qin Yuanliang, the Flying Fire Patriarch; and Ma Zhaoxiong, the Plague God on Earth, all wearing the three great irons, handcuffs and leg fetters. At the sight of them a cold shiver ran through the monk. He reached up and pressed his inner light, and already he understood it all. “Namo Amitabha,” he murmured. “Good, good.”

When the monk saw them, he hurried to hide off to one side, and the four men did not see Ji Gong.
