One wore a purple warrior’s cap, a purple archer’s-sleeve robe with a silk sash at the waist, an unlined jacket and thin-soled boots; his face was as blue as indigo, his hair like cinnabar, and red bristles lay flat over his ears. The other wore a kingfisher-blue jacket, dressed as a fighting man, with a fair face — a handsome figure of a man. Each held a steel broadsword. The newcomers were none other than Cloud and Smoke in the Wind, Lei Ming, and the Masterful White Ape, Chen Liang. Ever since the two had finished with their lawsuit in the capital some time before, they had gone home, as had Ma Zhaoxiong and Qin Yuanliang. Lei Ming and Chen Liang lived quietly behind closed doors and would not come out; they had seen through the greenwood life. Then they received Ji Gong’s invitation: Ji Gong was holding a charity feast at Jinshan Temple, and the two of them could not stay away. They got together two hundred taels as an offering and came to Jinshan Temple to help Ji Gong look after the donors. Ji Gong called Lei Ming and Chen Liang aside. “I want you two to do a job for me,” he said. “What are your orders, Master?” said Lei Ming and Chen Liang. “You two needn’t stay in the temple helping me with the guests,” said Ji Gong. “Hurry off to Kuihua Village. Right now Qin Kui, Chancellor Qin’s son, has carried off Zhang Jinniang, the sister of the magistrate of Haichao County, and a chief of the three constable squads called An Tianshou has gone to rescue his young lady. Go and help him, and get the young lady out of that dragon’s pool and tiger’s den. Just get her out — and whatever you do, don’t stir up Qin Kui and his lot. He has an old Daoist there, and you two are no match for him; on no account cross weapons with him. If you two land yourselves in trouble, I’m very busy here, and I won’t be able to save you.” Lei Ming and Chen Liang nodded. The two left Jinshan Temple, went by boat to Kuihua Village and came ashore after dark. Once ashore, they flew over eaves and ran along walls to Qin Kui’s house to take a look, and spied a crowd drinking and talking in the main hall. When Lei Ming and Chen Liang had heard all they needed, the two searched everywhere for the young lady, and came at last to the main room in the east side courtyard, where the serving women were trying to talk the girl round.

Lei Ming and Chen Liang had a mind to go in and rescue the young lady, but then they thought: men and women must not touch hands, and she was an unmarried girl, not yet out of the inner chambers. While the two were still hesitating, they saw An Tianshou go into the room. “Ah!” he cried. “Where has the young lady gone?” Lei Ming and Chen Liang thought, “Who can this be, who got here ahead of us?”

The two hurried off in pursuit and chased all the way out of the village without catching anyone. Then they heard a great shout go up inside the village, and the two came back to find An Tianshou fighting Quan Deliang and Cheng Zhiyuan, the three locked in combat. Before long they saw An Tianshou taken by the old Daoist.
