Now, Ji Gong went over and grabbed the big fellow. “You rascal!” said the monk. “You’ve got no luck. If you’d stood there a moment longer, I’d have given you the five strings of cash. But you meant to grab them and run, and that won’t do. You’re only fated for five hundred coppers. If you try to run off with five strings, I’ll haul you to Qiantang County and take you to court.” At this the big fellow took fright, wrenched himself free and took to his heels. “After him!” said the monk. The fellow ran headlong without looking where he was going, and just as he turned the corner of an alley he came straight on a man carrying a load of porcelain. Not watching what he was doing, he knocked into it and smashed seventeen bowls and two dishes, which came to four strings and five hundred cash. The fellow had no way out of it; he had to pay. He gave the man four strings and five hundred and was left with five hundred. No wonder the monk had said his heart was bad.

Having given all the money away, the monk was walking on when he saw two squires coming toward him: one was Zhao Wenhui, the other Squire Su Beishan. As soon as they saw Ji Gong, Su Beishan and his friend hurried over and bowed. “Master,” they said, “you were wronged in that case, sir. We heard you’d been taken away in chains by Chancellor Qin’s mansion, and we were very uneasy. Today we went to Lingyin Temple on purpose to call on you.” “My case is over,” said Ji Gong. “Chancellor Qin didn’t do anything to me.” And he told the two of them all that had happened at Chancellor Qin’s mansion. When he had heard it, Su Beishan said, “Have you had any wine yet today?” “I was just wanting a drink,” said Ji Gong. “Where are you two off to at this hour?” “We heard from our servants that the daughter of an official family has fallen into the pleasure quarters,” said Su Beishan, “only we don’t know whether it’s true or not. The two of us are going to take a look.” “Good,” said the monk. “I’ll go and take a look too.” “Master,” said Zhao Wenhui, “it’s hardly fitting for you to go to the brothel, sir. You’ve left the world; you’re meant to cultivate the Way and sit in meditation. If you go to a place like that, won’t people laugh at you?” “When you come on a show, you join in the play,” said the monk. “There’s no harm in that. The three of us will go there right now.” Su Beishan roared with laughter, and the three went on together. Ahead of them was an alley running east to west, with a sign that read “Yanhua Lane.” They entered the alley and came to the second gate on the north side. A lamp hung high over the gateway, and on the gate was a pair of couplet scrolls that read:
“At the first watch of the night the hours melt away, cups pass and glasses change, and the pleasure is sweet. When the cock has crowed three times, the guest is gone, his money scattered, and the show ends empty.”
When the monk had read it, the three of them went in. They had scarcely stepped inside when the doorkeeper made them welcome: “Why, it’s Master Zhao and Master Su, the two squires!” The monk looked up. Facing the gate was a screen wall, and in front of it stood a fish basin planted with lotus leaves and lotus flowers. On the screen wall was a poem of four lines, which read:
Fairies down here such as heaven above has none;the lowborn must lean on the wellborn to rise.Night after night the orchid chamber welcomes a new guest;the Dipper turns, the stars move on, and the husband changes.

The three went on in. The courtyard was paved with square bricks. The main room on the north side was five bays wide, with a veranda in front and a yard behind; the east and west side rooms were three bays each, and beyond them, east and west, were further yards. A big awning had been put up over the courtyard. On the pillars of the main room on the north side hung a couplet that read:
“Before the hall of song and dance,love-trees are planted all around;in the pool of white lotus, the scent of joined branches never fails.”
Across the top was written: “A peck of gold comes in every day.” The three had only just reached the middle of the courtyard when a maidservant came out of the main room. “Master Su, Master Zhao, you’ve come! How is it you’re so at leisure today?” She raised the bamboo blind high, and the three went into the main room and looked about. Against the north wall stood a rosewood side table with upturned ends; in front of it was an Eight Immortals table, with a chair on either side. On the long table stood a crystal fish bowl, in which swam yolk-yellow goldfish with dragon eyes and phoenix tails. To the east was a fruit dish piled with fruit, and to the west stood a mirror. On the wall hung a scroll with a half-length painting of a beauty. Someone had inscribed a poem of four lines on it, which read:
A hundred poses, a hundred charms, yet he painted not the whole of her, only to the waist.A pity the painter’s brush lacked the skill:the parts that stir desire were never drawn.
Beneath it was written: “Inscribed by the Lover of Flowers.” On either side hung a pair of couplet scrolls, which read:
“When a welcome guest arrives, fondness never palls;when a kindred heart comes, the talk runs long.”

Zhao Wenhui read it and nodded. Truly, some people are born for the pleasures of wind and moon. The three of them sat down, and the madam said, “Sirs, what wind has blown you gentlemen here today? It’s been ages since you came.” “We heard from our servants,” said Su Beishan, “that you’ve taken in a new beauty here. Call her out and let’s have a look at her.” “Everybody in my house is newly taken in,” said the madam. “I’ll call them for you gentlemen to look over.” She called out, “Girls! Come and meet the guests!” From outside came sweet, lilting voices, soft and languid and full of a thousand charms, and in came four lovely courtesans, every one of them with her hair sleek and freshly combed, a light touch of rouge and powder, moth eyebrows lightly brushed and fine clothes on her back. They came up to Squire Zhao and Squire Su and stood before them. Their names were asked. The girls all saw that a poor monk was sitting there too, and covered their mouths and laughed. “Fine, fine,” said Ji Gong. “Su Beishan, what do you two think of these?” “Not bad,” said Squire Su. “You think they’re all fine,” said the monk. “If you ask me, those lotus-white faces are nothing but skeletons wearing flesh, and that lovely rouge and finery are all sharp knives for killing men.” With that he picked up a brush, took some notepaper from the table and dashed off a poem in seven-character regulated verse:
Girls of the mist and flowers, prettily combed and painted,in the bridal chamber night after night change their grooms.
A pair of jade wrists, a pillow for a thousand men;a dab of red lips, tasted by ten thousand guests.
They put on every shy and bashful air there is,and fashion a heart that is false through and through.
Welcoming the new and sending off the old, who knows how many? And on purpose, all bashful, they let fall two streams of tears.

Zhao Wenhui and his friend read it and roared with laughter. Then the madam said, “Which one would you gentlemen like to wait on you?” Pointing at each in turn, she gave their names: Lanxiang, Qiugui, Lianfang, Xiaomei. “Not these,” said Su Beishan. “The one your house has just taken in — I hear she’s actually the daughter of an official family who has fallen into the trade by mischance. She’s the one we’ve come to see.” The madam had long known that these two were among the richest men in Lin’an, and said at once, “If you gentlemen hadn’t brought up the girl I’ve just bought, well and good. But since you do, it’s a long story. You see, for those of us who live by this trade, once you get old you’re finished. I had a daughter, and His Lordship Wang Shengxian, the Flashy Libertine, bought her for a concubine. I got a few hundred taels for her, but I was living off it, and if you sit and eat, even a mountain gets eaten away, so I bought someone. She’s from Jinling. Her father was a prefect some years back, and her mother died young. He had been censured and was in the capital, staying at Hu Wancheng’s inn. Her father was called Yin Mingchuan. He wanted to find some way back in at the capital, but who’d have thought it — a swindler cheated him out of several thousand taels, and he never got his post either. He fell ill from the blow and lay sick at the inn three months, spent every last copper he’d put by, and died. His daughter, Yin Chunxiang, sold herself to bury her father, and I paid three hundred and fifty taels for her. When she came over and saw it was a house of pleasure, she was furious and tried to kill herself. When I questioned her closely, it came out that only a hundred taels had been spent in all, and Hu Wancheng had pocketed the rest. Hu Wancheng had told her she was being sold to an official as his concubine, so when she saw it was the brothel she wanted to die. It was only when I poured out my troubles to her — those three hundred and fifty taels didn’t come easy, and if she died, it’d be the ruin of me! She’s a good sort, mind. She said she’d shelter with me for the time being, and if she met someone who truly understood her and bought her out, I wouldn’t be short of my silver. She wrote out a poem in her own hand and said, ‘If any cultivated gentleman or merchant comes, you can show him this.’” “Bring it here and let me see,” said Su Beishan. The madam fetched it and unrolled it, and the two squires started. It read:
Ten thousand sorrows — to whom can I tell them? Smiling before others, grieving behind their backs.Do not read this poem as a common thing:a thousand tears fell for every line.

When Ji Gong and the other two had read it, they asked, “Which courtyard is Yin Chunxiang in? We want to see her.” “In the east courtyard,” said the madam. “It used to be my daughter’s rooms. Come with me, the three of you, sirs.” Su Beishan and the others stood up and followed her out of the main room. To the east was a screen gate of four leaves, and through it lay another courtyard, with buildings on three sides; its main room on the north side had a veranda out in front and a lean-to behind. They lifted the curtain and went in. On the north wall hung a set of four scrolls, with couplet scrolls on either side. The first showed a woman standing at her gate, and five or six men who would not move on, standing there gazing at her. Someone had inscribed lines of verse on it:
A coil of phoenix-knot hair, glossy-dark as cloud, two ivory combs slanting apart, white as silver. She leans at the gate and stands with her head raised:how many passers-by go broken-hearted!

The second showed a woman combing her hair. A man seemed about to leave, and the woman seemed not to want to let him go. It was painted to the life, and someone had inscribed a poem of four lines on it too:

A match is meant to last a hundred years;after longing so long, how could she let him go?The brush catches spirit and form and every pose:what lies in two hearts, only the two of them know.

Two sprays of blossom, to be set within a carved railing, have met while the buds are still unopened. So tender a beauty, not yet used to wind and rain —we charge the Lord of the East to guard them well.

The fourth showed a bed hung with curtains, through which could be glimpsed a man and a woman lying together, half hinting at the joys of spring. Someone had inscribed a poem of four lines on it too:
The luan and the phoenix entwine, tumbling over and over;spring in Wuling, a meeting with immortals. She softly turns her apricot cheek, and her gold hairpin slips;her lightly brushed brows, her cloud of hair askew.

The couplet on either side read:
“In these rooms are kept twelve golden hairpins;at this gate are welcomed three thousand pearl-shod guests.”
The two squires looked about them: it truly was a world of its own. They went into the room and sat down. Floor-length curtains hung over the inner room on the east, and the inner room on the west was the same. On the east wall hung a scroll painting of peonies, the flower of wealth and rank, and someone had inscribed on it two lines from the Four Books: “Placed in wealth and rank, do what befits wealth and rank; placed in poverty and lowliness, do what befits poverty and lowliness.” On either side hung another couplet, which read:
“Within the bounds of the teachings there is a place of joy;beyond wind and moon there is little to say.”
The madam went into the inner room and said, “Miss, Master Zhao and Master Su have come especially to call on you. They’ve long admired a young lady of such great talent and beauty.” From inside came a sweet, soft voice: “So the two gentlemen have come to call. Let me come out and see them.” A hand lifted the curtain, and a young woman came out. Zhao Wenhui, Su Beishan and Ji Gong too opened their eyes wide and looked. She truly had a beauty to rule a kingdom and a heavenly grace, tender of heart and fine of bone, enchanting in every movement.
