Chapter Thirty-Four · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Working sorcery, the wicked Daoist sets out to do harm;Showing his powers, Ji Gong meets him in a contest of magic

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: at night in a temple courtyard, a bearded Daoist with long hair streaming in the wind stands behind an altar table, holding up a sword with a burning charm and staring in astonishment; in front of the table at the right a ragged monk laughs aloud with a palm-leaf fan in one hand and the other hand on his hip.

Now, Ji Gong and the sorcerous Daoist were in the middle of their quarrel when the Daoist said, “Monk, if I call you three times, do you dare answer me three times?” “Never mind three times,” said Ji Gong. “I’ll dare answer you six. Go on, call!” The Daoist called him three times running. Muttering an incantation, he slapped his wine cup down on the table upside down and said, “By command!” The monk, who had been drinking away, suddenly keeled over and lay on the floor. Squire Liang was alarmed at the sight. “Venerable Master,” he kept saying, “what’s happened to him?” “Since you ask,” said the Daoist, “I used a little trick and laid him out. For every day my wine cup stays turned down here, the monk lies there a day. Only when I pick the cup up, or give him some medicine, can he live!” The words were barely out of his mouth when the monk stood up. “I haven’t picked up my wine cup,” said the Daoist, “and you’ve come back to life.” “Fair enough,” said the monk. “You haven’t given me any medicine yet. I’ll just lie down again, and that settles it.” “Monk,” said the Daoist, “do you dare tell me the eight characters of your birth?” “No harm in that,” said the monk. “I’ll tell you. I was born in such-and-such a year, on such-and-such a day of such-and-such a month. There, I’ve told you everything. Now what are you going to do?” At once the Daoist muttered an incantation, said, “By command!”, struck the monk with his palm right on the crown of his head and said, “Swift!” He stood up. “Squire, once I’ve gone, send the monk away at once. Otherwise he’ll be dead by cockcrow, and you’ll have a murder case on your hands.” Squire Liang looked: Ji Gong lay in a stupor, dead to the world. The Daoist made straight for the door, and the squire followed close behind him. “Immortal Master, please don’t go! Let me apologize on the monk’s behalf.”

The Daoist did not answer, but went straight back to Xiangyun Temple on Mount Wuxian and called to his junior brother Liu Miaotong, “Quick, tie me up a straw man!” “Who are you out to harm this time?” Liu Miaotong asked. “I’m not harming anyone without cause,” said Zhang Miaoxing. “I was getting money out of Squire Liang, and this monk, Crazy Ji, had the gall to make a fool of me. I mean to do Ji Gong in by secret arts and have my revenge. Only then will I get this rage out of my chest.” Liu Miaotong did not dare cross him either. At once he tied up a straw man out of dry straw and set it down there. The wicked Daoist also sent Liu Miaotong to get together the things he needed. When they had eaten supper, he first set out an Eight Immortals table in front of the main hall, then laid out the censer, the candle spikes and the rest of the five altar pieces, and everything else he would need, and set the two straw men one on either side.

The wicked Daoist waited until all the stars were out. Then he went outside, took off his Daoist cap, pulled away the cord that bound up his hair, unwound his head cloth and let his hair fall loose. He drew his sword, lit incense at once and prayed aloud: “Gods and spirits passing by, Master of the Three Pure Ones, protect your disciple! I mean to do away with Crazy Ji! I’ve got silver out of Squire Liang, and I’ll burn incense and make offerings to you, and drape you in a new robe to fulfil my vow.” His prayer done, he flicked rootless water over the sword, scattered the five grains, ground cinnabar, tore strips of yellow maobian paper and drew three spirit talismans. He set the sword ready, stuck a talisman on it and cried, “Quick!” He whirled the sword, and the more he whirled it, the bigger grew the talisman’s fire. “First talisman,” he said, “raise a raging gale! Second talisman, fetch me Ji Gong’s soul! Third talisman, I’ll make him die and become a ghost, and the ghost die and become ash!” He was gloating away when he felt a cold rush of air at his back: someone was coming at him with a blade. The Daoist dodged aside, looked up and saw that a hero of the greenwood had arrived. By the lamplight he got a good look at him. On his head was an airy horsehair cap, and tucked aslant by his temple was a Flower of Rectitude and Chastity. He wore a soft jacket of black satin with close-set inch-long buttons all the way down, black satin trousers, patterned leggings, blue satin socks and slip-on shoes with stitched thousand-layer soles. His face was like white jade, his eyes like bright stars, his brows as if brushed on in lacquer, the bridge of his nose high, his lips like rosy clouds — handsome in every feature. Blade in hand, he came hacking at the Daoist. Zhang Miaoxing dodged aside, pointed a finger at him, muttered an incantation and said, “By command!” The man toppled over. The Daoist was rushing in to cut him down with his sword when a voice called from the house: “Brother, whatever you do, don’t kill him! He’s a friend of mine.” The speaker came over and first helped the man up.

A word of explanation: the newcomer was from Danyang County in Zhenjiang Prefecture. His surname was Chen, his given name Liang, and he lived at Chen Family Fort. He had lost both parents as a child and been brought up by his uncle and aunt. He also had a younger sister, Yumei, and his uncle, Chen Guangtai, ran a shop selling white cloth. From boyhood Chen Liang had loved practising with fists and feet, staves and cudgels, and from a professional escort he had learned a set of Advancing Linked Kicks. Later he made friends with a man of those parts named Lei Ming, known by the nickname Cloud and Smoke in the Wind (Fengli Yunyan). The two were as close as flesh and blood, and Lei Ming drew Chen Liang into the greenwood. In Yushan County in Jiangxi there was the head of an escort agency, surnamed Yang, given name Ming, whose nickname was Awe of the Eight Directions, the Night-Roaming God. He was a man who acted the knight-errant and upheld justice. He made it his business to take up any wrong he came across on the road; he killed corrupt officials and cut down local tyrants, and all his life he loved to befriend the heroes of the land. After Chen Liang joined the greenwood he kept company with these chivalrous men. They were known as the Thirty-Six Heroes of Yushan County, and there were men of every sort among them. One day it was the birthday of Yang Ming’s mother. Everyone came to offer congratulations, and all of them brought birthday gifts. Chen Liang came without bringing a thing. “Worthy brother,” said Lei Ming, “you really ought to have got some gifts together to show your filial respect. It’s the old lady’s birthday. It would look better in front of everyone else too.” “I have a gift,” said Chen Liang. “I’ll fetch it in a while. It’ll be something out of the ordinary.” It was then early in the fourth month. Some time after the third watch that night he stole a platter of ten big fresh peaches, and everyone who saw them marvelled. At that season the new peaches were not yet ripe and last year’s were long gone; to come up with ten big peaches was no easy feat. Everyone hailed him with a nickname, the Masterful White Ape (Shengshou Baiyuan), and from then on that was what people called him.

That year Chen Liang went home to visit his uncle. When he got there, his sister Chen Yumei and his uncle told him, “You had no business joining the greenwood. In our Chen family, no one may have held office for generations, but we have always been people of learning and propriety. Now you’ve gone off into the rivers and lakes and turned bandit in the greenwood. For one thing, you’ve let down our ancestors above; for another, you can’t face the neighbours here below. A thief for a day is an outlaw for life. Once you’re caught and brought before the authorities, you’ll hardly escape the Yunyang marketplace and the full penalty of the law. Above you, your parents will be a thief’s parents; below you, your sons and grandsons will be a thief’s sons and grandsons. Take our advice: turn back soon, mend your ways at once and make a fresh start. Besides, there’s no one to look after the family business.” Chen Liang heard all this and said not a word. It was just as they say: With a true friend, a thousand cups of wine are too few; when talk doesn’t mesh, half a sentence is too much. The next day he left home without even saying goodbye. But he had a plan of his own. “Once I’ve left,” he thought, “I’ll go to the capital and seek out an eminent monk or a learned Daoist, and leave the world myself to settle the sinful debts of my life. I have no parents above to tie me down and no wife or children below to hold me back.”

One day he came to Yunlan Town. Wanting some money for the road, he changed into his night-walker’s clothes after dark, got into a wealthy household and stole several dozen taels of silver. As it was late, he thought he would go to Xiangyun Temple and look in on his elder brother Liu Miaotong. When he reached the temple he did not knock at the gate but came in over the roof on the east side. He looked: in front of the main hall stood a table, and behind it stood a Daoist with his hair in disarray and menace in his dark face, sword in hand, in the middle of working magic. Chen Liang did not know him. “This scoundrel must have done away with Brother Liu Miaotong!” he thought. “Now here he is, working sorcery and stirring up evil. It’s infuriating. I may as well kill him and get this anger out of my heart.” With that he jumped down and slashed, but missed the Daoist. The Daoist gave his sleeve a shake and brought Chen Liang down. Chen Liang shut his eyes and waited to die. Then Liu Miaotong rushed out. “Brother, this is my friend. For my sake, don’t kill him.” “Oh, I see,” said Daoist Zhang. “You’re in league with outsiders to do away with me, so you can have this temple to yourself.” “No,” said Chen Liang. “I was rash, that’s all. I took it you’d done away with Liu Miaotong and taken the temple for yourself. I didn’t know you two were brothers in the Way.” Liu Miaotong introduced the two of them, and Chen Liang admitted he had been in the wrong. Then they went into the house, and Chen Liang asked, “What magic is Daoist Master Zhang working out there?” “Worthy brother,” said Liu Miaotong, “you didn’t come earlier and you didn’t come later — you had to come today of all days. He means to harm Ji Gong, the elder of Lingyin Temple, and seize his three hun-souls and seven po-souls. I’ve heard people say that Ji Gong is a man who has attained the Way. I doubt he’ll really be able to fetch the man’s soul.” At this Chen Liang said to himself, “I was just going to seek out an eminent monk or a learned Daoist and leave the world, and by chance, here today, I’ve come upon just such men. Now let me see which of the two has the greater powers.” He was still turning this over when he heard the Daoist outside start his magic again. “Crazy Ji’s soul hasn’t come — what is it waiting for?” He whirled up the second talisman, and it blazed. Just as he flung it outward, a raging gale rose from the northwest. What was it like? There is a verse to prove it:

The raging gale has risen, trees are felled and forests razed; the river’s voice moans in the murk, the withered trees sink into darkness; sea waves leap up like mountains, muddy billows press on in ten thousand folds; ten thousand ghosts howl in fury under a sky of smoke, and flying sand and hurtling stones strike people down at random.

When the gust had passed, there came the sound of straw sandals — scuff, scuff — riding in on the wind. Before long, there in front of the altar table stood a ragged, crazy monk. “Brazen demon monk!” said Zhang Miaoxing. “I summoned your soul. How is it you’ve come to me in the flesh?” Ji Gong burst out laughing. “Wretch, you’re the brazen one! Don’t you know that good and evil are repaid in the end — it’s only a matter of sooner or later?”
