Chapter Sixty-Six · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

At Crouching Tiger Bridge, the rapist kills a monk;At Qingfeng Village, Ji Gong saves a scholar

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a vegetable garden with a bamboo fence, a thatched house and a grape arbour, a ragged monk hangs head-downward from the frame over a stone well with his feet hooked over the beam, laughing, scooping water with his cap held in both hands; an old gardener has fallen on the ground at the left with his hand out and mouth open, an overturned bucket and a hoe beside him.

Now, Ma Jing opened his eyes and looked. Under Ji Gong’s monk’s cap was a fox, as big as a dog. “Look,” said Ji Gong. “This is your wife.” “Master,” said Ma Jing, “my wife is a fox?” “Your wife is not a fox,” said Ji Gong. “This fox has a grudge against you. It took on your wife’s likeness to throw your household into disorder and do you harm.

“Your wife is at home right now. She was a good woman all along. Don’t listen to what Li Ping told you: what Li Ping saw before was the demon in her shape. Go and fetch Li Ping and let him have a look, and your friend will come out of it clean as well.” When Ma Jing heard this, he hurried off to the wine shop and fetched Li Ping. Li Ping came to the temple and looked: it was a big fox. “What’s all this about?” said Li Ping. Ma Jing told him the whole story from beginning to end, and only then did Li Ping understand that his sister-in-law, Madam He, was a good woman. “Ma Jing,” said the monk, “kill the fox.” Ma Jing drew his blade and struck at the fox. The monk pointed a finger, and the fox’s head fell off. “Find some firewood and straw and set it alight,” said the monk, “and burn the fox together with Gao Qing’s body.” Ma Jing found firewood and straw and burned Gao Qing’s body and the fox together. “Ma Jing,” said the monk, “are you going to let Hua Yunlong out? Or shall I go to your house and arrest him?” “Have mercy, have mercy!” said Ma Jing. “For my sake, forgive him.” “That won’t do!” said the monk. “Hua Yunlong’s crimes are monstrous and his wickedness has no bounds. If you don’t let him out and I go to your house to arrest him, you’ll be dragged into the lawsuit too.” “Then I’d better let him out,” said Ma Jing, “and you can catch him after that, Master.” “Very well,” said the monk. “Off you go.”

Ma Jing thanked Ji Gong and only then went home to see. Sure enough, his wife had gone to her mother’s and had just this moment come back.
