Chapter Sixty-Nine · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Qian Xinsheng steals the silver by dark of night; The Masterful White Ape scouts Zhao Family Tower in secret

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: at night, a bearded hero and a younger hero in warrior's dress lie flat on a tiled roof with their heads raised over the ridge, peering down; below, along a covered lattice gallery hung with lit lanterns, two maids carry hand lanterns ahead while a young lady in an embroidered gown walks supported by a serving woman on each side; a pine, a garden rock and a crescent moon are at the right.

Now, Chen Liang drew his blade and sprang out. He saw the thief flit off and in through a gateway on the north side of the lane. Chen Liang hurried after him and peered through the crack of the gate. In the yard the thief untied the centipede ladder and carried it into the main north building. Chen Liang twisted round and leapt into the yard. There were three rooms on the north side, and he saw the thief go into the east inner room and light the lamp. Chen Liang came up outside the window, wet a little hole in the window paper and looked in. The kang ran along the back wall of the room. On it stood a low kang table and a heap of cotton quilts. On the floor were an Eight Immortals table, a money chest and some stools, and on the table stood a lamp.

The thief sat on the kang and pulled out the silver, so happy his heart burst into flower. He opened the bundle and gazed at it, talking to himself. He picked up a lump of silver and said, “This piece buys a house. This piece buys land. This piece sets me up in business.”

When he had talked on for a good while, he wrapped the silver up again and put it in the money chest. From the chest he took out a string of cash, counted off a hundred coins, and went out with the wine pot to buy wine. Chen Liang had already hidden himself up on the roof. Qian Xinsheng came out and pulled the door shut behind him, singing as he went: a bit of hahaqiang, a bit of erhuang, a few popular ditties, so happy he didn’t know what to do with himself. He came to the wine shop. “Shopkeeper Wang,” he said, “fill me some wine.” The shopkeeper was a Shanxi man, and people called him Old Xi. In the past Qian Xinsheng had often cheated Old Xi out of his wine. He would go for wine at night, when Old Xi had put up his shutters and sold through a little hatch. Qian Xinsheng took two wine pots exactly alike, filled one with cold water, and handed in the empty one for Old Xi to fill. When Old Xi had filled it and passed it out to him, Qian Xinsheng said, “Put it on my account, shopkeeper.” “No credit,” said Old Xi. “No credit?” said Qian Xinsheng. “Then pour it back.” He handed in the pot of cold water, Old Xi poured it back into the wine jar, and Qian Xinsheng had swapped himself a pot of wine for nothing. As time went on Old Xi grew suspicious, because lately all his drinkers were saying the wine was no good. That day Qian Xinsheng came for wine again. When it was poured he wanted credit. “No credit,” said Old Xi. “No credit? Then pour it back,” said Qian Xinsheng, and handed the cold water in again. Old Xi tasted it and found it was cold water. He came out and grabbed Qian Xinsheng, saw that he had two pots, and the two of them came to blows until somebody parted them. So today, when Qian Xinsheng said he wanted wine, Old Xi said, “Mr. Qian, you come cheat wine again.” “I’ll pay you first,” said Qian Xinsheng. “A hundred coins’ worth.” The wine was poured, and Qian Xinsheng took the pot and went home well content. He had barely reached his gate when Chen Liang reached out from behind and caught him by the back of the neck.
