Chapter Seventy-Three · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

At Daliu Grove, Ji Gong strikes terror into a lecherous thief; In a little tavern, the head constables find the holy monk

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a narrow earthen path between two rivers, with willows, reeds and an arched bridge in the distance, a ragged monk stands with his legs wide apart and his arms stretched out, a palm-leaf fan in one hand, grinning to block the way; a young man in a head-cloth leading a donkey points at him angrily, and a young woman riding the donkey with a bundle behind her looks on, wide-eyed.

Now, at the sight of Ji Gong, Hua Yunlong was frightened out of his wits. “Well, Hua Yunlong!” said Ji Gong. “Where do you think you’re going?”

A word of explanation: where had Ji Gong come from? When the monk left the inn in the middle of the night, Head Constables Chai and Du dared not go back to sleep, for fear of having no money for the room and the food the next day. Without waiting for the inn to stir, the two of them jumped the wall as well and made straight for the Longyou county yamen. When they reached the yamen gate and looked about, there was a teahouse across the way. The two of them went into the teahouse and saw several Longyou head constables drinking tea there. “May I ask,” said Head Constable Chai, “have any of you gentlemen seen a monk?” “He’s coming up before the court any moment,” they said. “What for?” said Head Constable Chai. “Isn’t it the case of the second monk of Sanguan Shrine, who made off with a woman?” said the man. “No,” said Head Constable Chai. “The one I’m asking about is a poor monk.” A man to one side said, “Just now there was a poor monk outside the East Gate who stopped some men carrying a coffin and wouldn’t let them go on. You two go and look for him there.” Chai and Du went out to the East Gate again and searched, but still there was no sign of him. The two of them went round every tavern and eating house, searching here and searching there, until they came to a little tavern, and there they found Ji Gong. “Fine,” said Head Constable Chai. “So here you are. You ran off again in the middle of the night. The two of us have never been put through anything like it. You’d better explain yourself right now.” “Sit down, you two,” said the monk. Head Constables Chai and Du sat down. The monk called for more wine and more dishes. While the two of them were drinking, the monk said, “Got to take a leak.” He went out of the tavern and straight out of the West Gate. As he went along, there was a river on either side with a narrow path between, and from the other way came a donkey with a young woman riding on it and a man walking alongside.

This man had a rabbit’s head and a snake’s eyes. It was Kang Cheng with Kang Deyuan’s daughter. This Kang Cheng, the little wretch, had never meant any good. His plan was to sell his sister for a few hundred taels of silver and take himself a wife — and wouldn’t that be a fine thing? Early that morning, when they came out of the inn, he led the donkey off and slipped away down a little lane. “Where’s Father gone?” the girl asked. “Just keep going,” said Kang Cheng. “He’s waiting up ahead.” The girl didn’t like it, but she couldn’t get down off the donkey. Just as they came along this narrow path, Ji Gong, who had long since divined it all, planted himself in the middle and blocked the way so they couldn’t pass. “Monk,” said Kang Cheng, “go back.” “You go back,” said the monk. “We’ve got a donkey,” said Kang Cheng. “I’m a person,” said the monk. “Can’t you see we’re womenfolk?” said Kang Cheng. “I’m menfolk,” said the monk. “We can’t turn back,” said Kang Cheng. “And I can’t get round the bend,” said the monk. “Monk, you really are hateful,” said Kang Cheng.
