A word of explanation: this was a fox immortal Ji Gong had sent to open the villain’s eyes, for he meant to save Hua Yunlong without his knowing it. He wanted to test the villain’s heart and see whether, brought this low, he could change his ways or not. Ji Gong was, at root, a man who cultivated the Way. Those who have left the world make compassion their gate and goodness their root, and they cherish the virtue of sparing life. He was unwilling to seize the villain there and then and hand him over to the authorities. If only he could bring the villain to mend his ways and make a fresh start, Ji Gong would not arrest him. Who would have thought that even in his dream the villain would cling to his evil habits? Hua Yunlong woke with a start, drenched in sweat from fright, and only then did he know it had been a dream. He saw the sky was full of stars; it was probably some time after the second watch. He got to his feet and walked on. As he went, he saw a figure flicker into view ahead: there was a man. The villain had a guilty conscience, and he quickly drew his saber. When the two of them came close, the man said, “Is that Second Brother Hua?” Hua Yunlong looked carefully. It was no stranger: it was Zhang Rong, the Black-Wind Ghost. “Younger Brother Zhang,” said Hua Yunlong, “where are you off to?” Zhang Rong came over and made his bow. “Second Brother, it’s been a long time.”

A word of explanation: ever since Zhang Rong had fled from Yang Ming’s house, he had nowhere to turn, so he went to Lingxiao Temple on Mount Gutian to look for Hua Qingfeng. Hua Qingfeng knew that Zhang Rong and Hua Yunlong were sworn brothers, so he did not treat him as an outsider, and he let him stay at the temple. One day Jiang Tianrui, the Golden-Eyed Buddha, fled from Tiefo Temple and ran straight to Lingxiao Temple. When he saw his master, Hua Qingfeng asked, “Jiang Tianrui, why are you in such a sorry state? What’s become of your beard?” Jiang Tianrui told him the whole story, from beginning to end, of how Ji Gong had caught the demon at Tiefo Temple. Hearing it, Hua Qingfeng flew into a rage. “That damned Crazy Ji, the insolence of him! I’ll have to go after him and take my revenge.” From then on he nursed the grudge in his heart. Jiang Tianrui presented Hua Qingfeng with the book he had got hold of, the Precious Script of the Yin Demons. Hua Qingfeng studied it closely and made up his mind to forge the Five-Ghost Chill-Wind Sword. Once it was done, he could go after Crazy Ji and avenge Jiang Tianrui and Fellow Daoist Chang. To forge the Five-Ghost Chill-Wind Sword, he had to cut open five people, tear out their hearts and use their five ghosts; only then could it be done. So Hua Qingfeng sent Zhang Rong, the Black-Wind Ghost, down the mountain to lure five people up it, so that he could forge the Five-Ghost Chill-Wind Sword. That was why Zhang Rong had come down from Mount Gutian, out to trick people. Today he had run into Hua Yunlong, and the two of them exchanged bows. “Younger Brother Zhang,” said Hua Yunlong, “where have you been staying?” “A while back I went looking for you,” said Zhang Rong, “and stayed a few days at Ruyi Village on Fenghuang Ridge. I never thought this Yang Ming would turn out to be no friend at all. While I was staying at his house he treated me with contempt, and on top of that he said a lot of things that were out of line. Second Brother, you know my temper — how could I stand for that? After I left his house I went to stay at Lingxiao Temple on Mount Gutian. Right now your uncle has sent me down the mountain on an errand. Where are you headed, Second Brother?” “Right now there’s nowhere that will have me,” said Hua Yunlong. “Crazy Ji of Lingyin Temple is hard on my heels.” “Second Brother,” said Zhang Rong, “come up Mount Gutian with me. Your uncle, the Perfected One of the Nine Palaces, can shelter you, and he can talk the monk Ji Gong round, too. When monk praises monk, the Buddha’s Law flourishes; the Way within the Way, the wonder within the mystery. Red flower, white lotus root, green lotus leaf: the three teachings come home to one family. He’s a man who has left the world too. First, he holds no office; second, he serves in no yamen. If you’ve broken the laws of the realm, what business is that of a monk like him? Come with me to see the Perfected One, and you’ll have somewhere to lie low.” “I could go,” said Hua Yunlong, “but first I have to buy darts. I haven’t a single dart left in my pouch, and I rely entirely on my poisoned darts to protect myself.” “If you want to buy darts,” said Zhang Rong, “buy them in Xinglong Town up ahead.”
