Chapter Ninety-Seven · The Complete Tales of Ji Gong

Yang Ming stands by his friends and battles a gang of thieves;Yun Fei by a clever trick captures Awe of the Eight Directions

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a busy market street of shops with a gate tower at the far end, a ragged monk stands on one foot on top of a tall post and signboard outside a medicine shop hung with gourds, arms spread wide for balance and laughing; below, two constables in head-cloths, one gripping an iron ruler in both hands and one raising his, and a young swordsman in a cloak with a drawn sword all stare up in amazement.

Now, Zhou Rui, Little Marshal Xuantan, was standing at the door of the little wine shop, taking a rest. A good many of his friends were asking him how he had come to fall ill. “It was all because I was out catching Hua Yunlong, the Thieving Rat of Heaven and Earth,” said Zhou Rui. “One of the villain’s gang got me on the sly with a stone, and the blow made me cough up blood.” The friends all said, one after another, “Take it slow and get well. Don’t wear yourself out.”

Zhou Rui was a man who loved making friends. He had more friends than anyone, and plenty of people in Changshan County knew him. While they were talking, a man suddenly came out of the wine shop, and it was Hua Yunlong. “Quick, fellows, grab him!” Zhou Rui cried. “Don’t let Hua Yunlong get away!” Chai Yuanlu and Du Zhenying looked, and sure enough it was Hua Yunlong. The two head constables went over and blocked his way. “Friend,” said Chai, “you’re not going anywhere. You’ll stand trial for this one. I’m Chai Yuanlu, and he’s Du Zhenying. The two of us came out from Lin’an, through frost and dew, all to catch you. You pulled no end of jobs in Lin’an.” “Hua Yunlong,” said Du Zhenying, “are you going to make more trouble for us? Just come along with us.” The thief looked the two head constables over and gave a faint smile. “So you two are the very men ordered to catch Hua Yunlong?” “That’s right,” said Head Constable Chai. “Well, I am Hua Yunlong,” said the thief. “You two say you’re here to catch me, just like that. I’d be willing enough to go with you, but I’ve a friend who won’t hear of it.” “Where is this friend of yours?” said Chai Yuanlu. “As far as a thousand li,” said the thief, “and as near as before your eyes.” As he spoke, he drew his sword. “You villain!” said Chai Yuanlu. “You dare resist arrest?” “I want to see what you two can do,” said the thief. “Beat this sword in my hand, and I’ll go and stand trial with you.” “Good,” said Chai and Du. “Let’s see who’s the better.” They pulled out their iron rulers and struck at the thief’s head. The thief swung his sword to meet them. Chai and Du saw that the thief’s sword flew up and down, and he knew every move of the art; the two of them alone could not take him. Head Constable Chai thought, “This thief really is a fine fighter. No wonder he could pull jobs and kill people in Lin’an and steal the jade bracelets and the phoenix crown. If it weren’t the two of us here today, anyone else would have died at his hands.” In his heart Chai Yuanlu cursed the monk: he never parted company with them before, and he had to pick this very moment to part company, just when they ran into Hua Yunlong and came to blows. “Du,” said Chai Yuanlu, “look how hateful that monk is. At a time like this, he doesn’t even show up.” “It would be a fine thing if Ji Gong came along right now,” said Du Zhenying. Before the two of them had finished speaking, a voice came from high in the air: “Here I am. I can’t get down. I’ll fall and break my neck.” Head Constable Chai looked and saw Ji Gong standing on top of the tall signboard of a medicine shop, and no one knew how he had got up there. Everyone looked up and said, “Oh no, the monk’s going to fall to his death.”
