In the old town of Zhuge there lived a man named Shang Shiyu, a scholar. Once, when he was drunk, a joke of his gave offence to a local bully, who set his servants on him, and they beat him wildly. He was carried home and died. Shiyu had two sons, the elder named Chen and the younger Li, and a daughter named Sanguan. Sanguan was sixteen. The day had been set for her wedding, but because of her father it did not take place. Her two brothers went to law, and a whole year went by without the case being settled. The bridegroom’s family sent someone to call on her mother and ask that, given the circumstances, the marriage go ahead. Her mother was about to agree, but the girl came forward and said, “Who ever held a wedding when their father’s body was not yet cold? Have they no parents of their own?” When the bridegroom’s family heard this they were ashamed, and let it drop. Before long the two brothers lost their suit and came home with their wrongs unredressed. The whole family was full of grief and fury. The brothers planned to keep their father’s body unburied, as grounds for suing again. “A man is murdered and the courts do nothing,” said Sanguan. “That tells you what the times are like. Do you think Heaven will make a new Judge Bao, the Yama of the living, just for you two? How can you bear to leave his bones lying out?” The two brothers saw the sense of what she said, and buried their father. When the burial was done, Sanguan fled in the night, and no one knew where she had gone. Her mother was ashamed and terrified that the bridegroom’s family would find out, so she dared not tell any of their kin; she only had her two sons look for her quietly. For nearly half a year there was no trace of her.
