Liu Haishi

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in the back yard of a country house by daylight, a smiling scholar in a soft cap and wide-sleeved robe bends beside an open pigsty gate, gripping a large pig's ear and pointing at its tail, while a startled, open-mouthed man in a similar robe looks on, with two pigs peering from the sty, a well, a chicken coop and a tiled house wall behind.

Liu Haishi was a man of Putai who had fled the troubles to Binzhou. He was fourteen at the time. He studied under the same teacher as a Binzhou scholar named Liu Cangke, and the two became close and swore to be brothers. Before long Haishi lost both his father and his mother. He took their coffins home, and after that no word passed between them.
