I once heard the old master Li Jingyi tell this: “A certain gentleman in Shenyang was feasting with friends on a hilltop. Looking down the mountain, they saw a tiger come along with something in its jaws. It dug a hole with its claws, buried the thing, and went away. He sent men to see what had been buried, and they found a dead deer. So he took the deer away and loosely covered the empty hole. Before long the tiger came back leading a black beast whose fur was several inches long. The tiger went ahead as if ushering an honoured guest. When they reached the hole, the beast crouched and waited, glaring. The tiger dug into the hole and found the deer gone. It lay flat, trembling, not daring to stir. The beast, angry at being tricked, struck the tiger on the forehead with its paw, and the tiger dropped dead on the spot. Then the beast went straight off.”
