The Censor at Fengdu

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: inside a bright pillared hall at the mouth of a cave, a bowing official holding a burnt-out candle pleads from the floor below the steps, while a bearded senior official holding a tablet stands on the platform and points to an empty armchair at the end of the row, with two more officials seated behind and a table with an open register and an incense burner between them.

Outside Fengdu county there is a cave too deep to measure, said by tradition to be the court of Yama. All the instruments of punishment inside it are made by human hands. When the fetters and manacles rot and break, they are thrown out at the mouth of the cave, and the county magistrate replaces them with new ones, which are gone by the next morning. The cost of supplying them is entered among the county’s fixed expenses.
