The Twin Lanterns

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a moonlit night on a hilltop above a village, a finely dressed young woman looks up with a sorrowful smile and clasps the hand of a bowing young man in a plain gown, while two young maids behind her each hold a lantern on a short pole, with an old pine, rocks, a stony path and small village roofs below.

Wei Yunwang, of Penquan in Yidu, came of an old and eminent family. Later the family fell on hard times and could no longer keep him at his books. At twenty-odd he gave up his studies and went to work in his father-in-law’s wine shop. One evening he was sleeping alone upstairs in the wine house when he suddenly heard footsteps below. He started up and listened in fear. The sound came nearer, then up the stairs, each step loud and quick. Before long two maids carrying lanterns stood at his bedside. Behind them a young scholar led a girl up to the bed, smiling. Wei was astounded. Then it came to him that they were foxes; his hair stood on end, and he hung his head, not daring to look. The scholar laughed. “Don’t be suspicious of us, sir. My sister has a bond with you from a former life, and it is right that she should serve you.” Wei looked at the scholar. His brocade and sable dazzled the eye; Wei was ashamed of his own shabbiness and did not know what to say. The scholar led the maids away, leaving the lanterns behind. Wei looked closely at the girl. She was delicate and lovely as an immortal, and his heart was much taken with her. But he was too abashed to say anything playful. She glanced at him and laughed. “You’re no bookworm hugging his texts. Why put on the airs of a starving pedant?” She came straight to the pillow and warmed her hands in his bosom. At that Wei broke into a smile at last. They tugged at each other’s trousers, teasing, and so became lovers. Before the dawn bell sounded, the two maids came and led her away, and she promised to come again that night. In the evening she came, as she had said. “What luck you have, you silly man,” she laughed. “Without spending a single coin you’ve got a fine wife like me, who comes to you of her own accord night after night.” Wei, glad that no one was about, set out wine and drank with her. They played at guessing the hidden token, and she won nine times out of ten. Then she laughed. “Better let me hold the token and you do the guessing. If you’re right you win, if not you lose. If I’m to guess, you’ll never win at all.” So they did as she said and made merry all night. When at last they were going to bed she said, “Last night your quilt and mattress were coarse and cold. I couldn’t bear it.” She called a maid to bring bedding in a bundle, and spread it out on the bed: fine silks, fragrant and soft. Soon they loosened their sashes and lay in each other’s arms, the scent of her lip rouge heavy about them. Truly the Han emperor’s Land of Tenderness was nothing to it. From then on, this was how it went.
