The Earth God's Lady

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a spring day at the edge of a village, a sturdy villager in a head cloth and rough short jacket stops on the dirt path with his hands clasped and smiles, while a young woman in an embroidered jacket and long pleated skirt stands on the steps of a small brick roadside shrine and glances back at him, with a big weeping willow, a stone incense burner and tablet, a village wall with thatched cottages, and a small arched bridge in the distance.

Wang Bing of Diaoqiao was going out of his village when he saw a beautiful woman come out of the Earth God's shrine. She kept glancing at him, very warmly. He tried flirting with her, and she welcomed it gladly. They had nowhere to be alone together, so they agreed that she would come to him at night, and Wang told her where he lived. That night she came, as promised, and they took great delight in each other. He asked her name, but she firmly refused to tell it. From then on she came and went without a break. Wang shared a bed with his wife, yet the beauty would still come and lie with him, and his wife never noticed that anyone was there. Astonished, Wang asked her about it. “I am the Earth God's lady,” she said. Wang was terrified and wanted to break it off at once, but nothing he tried could keep her away. Things dragged on like this for half a year, until he was so worn out with illness that he could not get up. The beauty came more often than ever, and the whole household saw her. Before long, just as might be expected, Wang died. Still the beauty came once a day. Wang's wife cursed her: “You lewd ghost, have you no shame? The man is dead. What do you keep coming for?” At that the beauty left and did not come back.
