Hacking the Python

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: by daylight on a rocky mountain path at the mouth of a valley, a sweating young woodcutter bends forward to rest, leaning on an upright pole and carrying his unconscious, head-bandaged elder brother on his back, with an axe at his belt, while a bundle of firewood lies in the foreground, pines and a stream stand at the right, and village thatched roofs show in the distance at the left.

In Hutian village there were two brothers named Hu who cut firewood for a living. Once they went deep into a dark valley and came upon a huge python. The elder brother, who was in front, was swallowed. The younger brother was terrified at first and was about to run, but when he saw his brother being devoured he flew into a rage, drew his woodcutter’s axe and hacked at the snake’s head. The head was wounded, but the snake went on swallowing. His brother’s head had already gone in, but by luck his shoulders would not go down. Desperate and at a loss, the younger brother seized his brother’s feet with both hands and pulled against the python with all his strength, and in the end he dragged him out. The python, in pain, went off too. He looked at his brother: his nose and ears had both dissolved away, and he was barely breathing. He carried him home on his back, stopping to rest more than ten times on the way. After half a year of doctoring and nursing, the brother recovered. To this day his face is all scars, and of his nose and ears only the holes remain. Ah! That among farmers there should be a younger brother who did a brother’s duty like this! Some say, “That the python did them no harm was because it was moved by his goodness and loyalty.” It is true!
