Liu Fanghui, a school instructor, was a native of the capital. He had a younger sister who was betrothed to a scholar named Dai, and the wedding day had been fixed. Just then the northern troops entered the region. Her father and brother feared the womenfolk would hold them back, so they planned to have her made up and sent off to the Dai family at once. Before she had finished making up, the marauding soldiers poured in, and father and son fled in different directions. The girl was carried off by a niru captain. She was with him for several days, and he never once took a liberty with her. At night he had her sleep on a separate bed, and he saw to her food and drink with great care. Then he seized a young man as well, about the girl’s age, handsome and refined in his bearing. The captain said to him, “I have no son. I mean to make you my heir. Will you agree?” The young man said yes, yes. The captain pointed at the girl and said, “If you agree, she will be your wife.” The young man was delighted and said he would do as he was told. So the captain put them in one bed, and they took to each other very happily. Afterwards, on the pillow, they told each other their names: the young man was Dai himself.
