In Kuaiji there is a shrine to Aunt Mei. The goddess was born a Ma, of a clan that lived at Dongguan. Before she could be married, her betrothed died young. She vowed never to marry another, and died at thirty. Her clan built her a shrine and called her Aunt Mei. In the bingshen year a scholar named Jin, of Shangyu, passed this way on his road to the examinations. He went into the temple and lingered there, his thoughts drifting into idle fancies. That night he dreamed that a maid in black came with a summons from Aunt Mei. He went with her. When he entered the shrine, Aunt Mei was standing under the eaves, waiting for him. She smiled. “You have honoured me with your regard, and truly I long for you. If you do not scorn my plainness, I would give myself to you as your concubine.” Jin murmured yes. Seeing him off, Aunt Mei said, “Go now. When your seat is ready, I will send for you.” He woke and was disgusted. That same night the people who lived there dreamed that Aunt Mei said to them, “Jin of Shangyu is now my husband. You must make his statue.” Next morning the villagers told their dreams, and all were the same. The head of the clan feared it would stain her chastity, and so he did not obey. Before long his whole family fell ill. In great fear he had a likeness made and set at her left. When it was finished, Jin said to his wife and children, “Aunt Mei has come for me.” He put on his robe and cap, and died. His wife, in bitter grief and rage, went to the shrine, pointed at the woman’s image and cursed it filthily; then she climbed onto the altar, slapped its face several times, and left. The Ma family now call him Uncle Jin.
