Setting Butterflies Free

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a bright spring day in the main hall of a county yamen, a magistrate in an official hat and robe sits behind his bench slapping the table and laughing, a kneeling countryman holds up an open bamboo basket from which swarms of butterflies fly out across the hall, and a runner with a long staff stands straight-faced beside the platform, with a screen, pillars, stone steps and a blossoming tree in the courtyard behind.

When Wang Shisheng of Changshan, a jinshi, was serving as a county magistrate, whenever he heard a lawsuit he would order the guilty party to pay a fine of butterflies to redeem the sentence, so many according to how heavy the offence was under the law. Hundreds and thousands would be set loose in the courtroom at once, like scraps of brocade blown on the wind, and Wang would slap the table and roar with laughter. One night he dreamed that a young woman in fine, lovely clothes walked calmly in and said, “Under your cruel rule, many of my sisters have perished. For a start, you shall have a small reproof, a frivolous one.” With that she turned into a butterfly and fluttered away. The next day he was drinking alone in his office when word suddenly came that the imperial inspector had arrived. He rushed out in a fluster. In the women’s quarters someone had stuck a white flower in his cap as a joke, and he had forgotten to take it off. The inspector saw it, took it for disrespect, and Wang came away after a thorough tongue-lashing. After that there were no more fines of butterflies.
