Summer Snow

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in the courtyard of a town temple on a snowy summer day, a lean man stands on the hall steps with his eyes shut and one finger raised, while an old man, a youth, a woman and a merchant kneel before him in thin summer clothes, looking up in astonishment, with an altar, a bronze incense tripod, pennant banners, a pine tree and drifting snowflakes around them.

On the sixth day of the seventh month of the dinghai year, heavy snow fell in Suzhou. The people were terrified, and went together to pray at the temple of the Great King. Suddenly the Great King came down into one of them and spoke through him: “Nowadays everyone who is called Old Lord has had a ‘Great’ added. Do you take me for a small god, not worth a single ‘Great’?” The crowd shuddered, and cried out with one voice, “Great Old Lord!” The snow stopped at once. From this we may see that even gods love flattery. Small wonder that those who doctor the lower parts are paid in so many carriages.
