Governor Yu Chenglong came to Gaoyou on a tour of inspection. It happened that a great gentry family there was about to marry off a daughter. Her trousseau was very rich, and one night burglars made off with all of it. The prefect could do nothing. Yu ordered every city gate shut but one, which was left open for travellers to come and go. He set the police clerk to guard it and search every load strictly. He also put up a notice telling every household in the city to stay at home and wait to be inspected and searched the next day, so that the stolen goods would be found without fail. Then he secretly told the police clerk: if anyone goes out and comes in through the gate more than once, seize him. By afternoon they had caught two men who carried nothing but what they had on. “These are the real thieves,” said Yu. The two kept up their crafty denials. Yu had them strip and be searched. Under their robes they were wearing two sets of women’s clothes, all from the trousseau. They had feared the great search next day and were in a hurry to move the goods, but there was too much to carry, so they wore it in secret and went out again and again.
