Story Three Hundred and Ninety · Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio

Peng Erzheng

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a country road in autumn daylight, a bearded traveller in a head-wrap and long gown leans over a donkey, holding open the mouth of a cloth bedding sack with one hand and a small knife with a cut thread in the other, while a dishevelled, wide-eyed man rises to his chest out of the sack, with a willow, a stone marker, furrowed fields and distant thatched houses behind.
